The Boroughs- Again, trying to keep it light, but this is so up my alley. Even though it is headed exactly where I thought it would (anyone see Pete Davidson’s horror movie from last year?) I’m hoping there’s a little twist in there. Meanwhile, Geena Davis’s character unlocks more clues, even though the main trio hasn’t let her in on their secrets just yet. I believe the audio description is Post House/VSI, which I’m now learning is the same thing, and I often credit them differently, and the writer is Maury Morrison, without a prayer of spelling her first name right. Some really lovely work, and I like hearing it from a company like Post House/VSI, because I’d like companies like this to embrace the consistency in excellence.
Witch Hat Atelier- TTS AD is coming for y’all. I’m warning you. This is really good. The seventh episode has Coco in a very precarious moment at the end, like her whole world might change. I love that the episode is titled “Who Is Magic For?”
Criminal Record- White Nationalism is apparently a problem in the UK as well. The plot continues to boil, and now that I’m about halfway in, I’d say if you wanted to jump into this show without having seen the first season, it is something where you’d be fine. It’s not an anthology series where everything resets, but aside from picking up on the vibe that the leads were in a previous season, they rarely, if ever, mention it. The AD here is good. Like there’s a scene where a drone has to drop a kid a phone so the cops can talk to him, and the tension is non-verbal, because it is timed to his friend returning to the apartment. Without great audio description, you’d miss that. Plus, it comments on how skinny he is, that you can see his ribcage.
Kevin- Probably my least favorite of the human AD tracks I heard today. I still don’t know what each animal is, and I frequently miss a joke because of it. Rat Pizza was an excellent example. Adult animation sometimes flourishes over time, and not every show is a winner out of the gate. Kevin is very clever, very promising, but I need a bit more from the AD.
Malcolm In The Middle- I put this off, because while I’ve seen episodes of the original, I wasn’t a die hard fan. Sure, it’s nice to see nearly the whole gang back together, but I hate the Bryan Cranston narrative, as the show is now crafted to support his new critical acclaim and stardom. Jane Kazmarek is just as good as he is, in the original series. Plus, knowing what Cranston can do in Breaking Bad, is a little like knowing Jim Carrey can do The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine, then watching him come back for an Ace Ventura or The Mask sequel. Like, it was a nice career kickstart, but he’s way beyond this. Zoo Digital has done some nice AD here.
Virgin River- It is basically what you’ve gotten for seven seasons, yet we are still trying to justify Doc being Doc. Come on. End the storyline, validate him, and move on. That subplot is dragging. And I’m not getting nearly enough Muriel. Announce she’s cancer free, and she’s off to be the next Golden Bachelorette, and then give her a spinoff. #JusticeForMuriel
Celebrity Jeopardy- Well, I was less enthused about the AD for the finale, but the winner seemed super happy. I don’t want to spoil it, even though this happened over a week ago. I don’t know what I wanted, because the final three were not the ones out of each group I wanted to see in the finale, so I truly didn’t care. I hope we get some solid celebs next seasonn. I want to see some of these people who are famous comedians, who did news-ish shows, to see how smart they are. Give me some Trevor Noah, Hasan Minaj, and Larry Wilmore. They aren’t doing anything right? Of course, neither is COlbert, but that wound is fresh.
