The Small Screen Diaries: 08/24/26

Yesterday… was nuts. I’m amazed I watched anything.

TV Shows Watched: Lanterns: S1E2 (HBO MAX) with audio description, Black Clover: S1E2 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, Solar Opposites: S6E9 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Strip Law: S1E10 (Netflix) with audio description

Lanterns- Did we just learn in this episode that Zoey is black? Probably could have gotten that piece of info earlier. I don’t think her intro at the bar in Episode 1 described her, so it forced me into defaulting her into redneck white lady, which she apparently is not. If studios don’t want ethnic description in the AD track, then perhaps they don’t need to have a conversation between the two black characters about these crazy white guys in their lives. If you don’t want to have a conversation on race while having a conversation on race, it circles back around into a thing you just don’t want blind people to know, because sighted people can clock those things, intentionally or otherwise. Besides that, I did like the AD this episode.

Black Clover- Continuing on with this who is magic for series on CrunchyRoll, which has solid written AD, but synthetic narration. As does everything on CrunchyRoll apparently.

Solar Opposites- Getting closer to the end. Lots of fun stuff here, including a really smart AD track by Dave Wallace that meets the show where it is.

Strip Law- I’m sad netflix cancelled this. It is a smart show, from watching ten episodes. It takes a lot of big swings and risks, and the last episode was a departure, which I appreciated. Also, pretty strong AD for the format, by International Digital Center also, just like Lanterns.

Best- Solar Opposites- I love and have loved how symbiotic the AD is here. This feels so much like if AD was organically considered from the beginning, during development.

Worst- Black Clover- Just for the synthetic aspect, it goes at the bottom. The writing is good though.
