So the Emmy awards were announced. Was your favorite show nominated? Favorite performance? I’d say the biggest welcome surprises for me (things I wasn’t predicting), were Rufus Sewell for The Diplomat, Your Friends And Neighbors, and Michael Urie for Shrinking. While there were a bunch of snubs, some expected, some not, the first time THe Amazing Race misses Reality Competition Series is notable, as The Bear fell out of Comedy Series, and the final season for both Squid Game and Stranger Things, previous winners in this category, failed to get any above the line nominations. Stranger Things still managed 7 nominations, while the third season of Squid Game was totally shut out. The final season of The Boys earned five below the line nominations as well. And, if Emmy voters have the mental acuity to remember to vote for Rob Reiner for The Bear, they should have managed Eric Dane for Euphoria.
TV Shows Watched: X-Men 97: S2E4 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed: S1E5 (Apple) with audio description, Nemesis: S1E4 (Netflix) with audio description, The Miniature Wife: S1E6 (Peacock) with audio description, Invincible: S4E8 (Amazon) with audio description, and The Daily Show: Tuesday (PAramount) no audio description
X-Men 97- The fact I’m pretty sure it is AI bothers me, and the campy Pharoah in this episode was a lot, but I do love the X-Men. Spoiler: a major death occurs. Bring the tissues. “Look at him. Tell him it will be OK.” Damn.
Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed- Paula is really in for a fight coming up on multiple fronts as Dennis continues to show how dangerous he can be, and meanwhile she’s being set up to lose the custody battle hard. Stepehn King loves this show, and the audio description is solid, but Apple hasn’t renewed the series yet. It wasn’t eligible for the Emmys this year, like Dutton Ranch, due to how the rules work.
Nemesis- Spoiler: A fairly major death occurs here too! Nemesis has been renewed, and it deserves it. This show is great. Don’t sleep on it. I wish someone else was doing the audio description. There are so many wonderfully talented black performers to match a nearly entirely all black cast. Why on earth is Vito on this? It cheapens the show.
The Miniature Wife- I only like this for Elizabeth Banks, who didn’t get an Emmy nom for it. It is a premise mostly wasted. The audio description is done by She-Ra, and it is underwhelming at times, but I’ve heard they/them on far worse.
Invincible- Excellent audio description. That whole egg retrieval sequence was fantastic. Basically, half the episode is waiting for Mark to heal.
The daily Show- I don’t usually watch the other hosts, but I did want to see Ronny’s interview with the author of The Babysitters Club, which he is apparently a huge fan of. There’s no way he just crammed that level of research. He was further into the weeds on storylines than she was.
