TV Shows Watched: Sugar: Season 2 (Apple) with audio description, Black Clover: S1E1 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, and American Classic: S1E7 (MGM Plus) with audio description
Seems like a slow news day until you realize that’s eight episodes of Sugar.
Sugar- I do plan on reviewing, which is the whole point of bingeing. I didn’t really love Season 1, though I appreciated its vibes in terms of that old school gumshoe thing Colin Farrell has going on, which reminded me of like The Maltese Falcon, or Chinatown. Then things got weird, and if you haven’t seen Sugar at all, just me acknowledging Season 2, is impossible. They made a really big swing in Season 1, which was the surprise twist, which defines the second season. I will avail casual readers who aren’t looking for spoilers, and save that for the review. As far as the audio description by PixelLogic, it was pretty solid. There were certain moments where the specificity of what was happening was well described. For example, the overdose sequence, hiding behind the door, flashing back and forth to how we got here, I’d imagine would be unintelligible nonsense without audio description. The labeling of the boxes, also important to the season long arc, totally visual. I have a feeling Sugar is visually specific in its style, and attempt to recreate a certain film noir vibe, but that is a guess, and those kinds of things fall short of being in the track.
Black Clover- I got a CrunchyRoll push about the new season of Black Clover coming, and I was like… more?Didn’t this just launch? So without paying much attention, I checked out the first episode, which has audio description. It is a little like if HArry Potter merged with Wicked, and themes also shared in witch Hat Atelier about “who is magic for?” But there are over 150 episodes already of this, and I’m not bingeing a 150 episode run like that. Gradually, over time, sure. The audio description here is different than the previous two CrunchyRoll shows, and I can tell. Different voice, not as stellar writing, but not bad either. Witch Hat Atelier and Tomb Raider King are superbly written, this is fine. If you want to watch the one kid without magic learn how to master magic, than this show might be for you.
American Classic- Little bit of a bombshell at the end there for Kristen and Richard, but Jon still hasn’t said his thing. And with the way Richard leaves things with Connor, I wonder if funding will resume. American Classic needs more episodes. Come on MGM Plus. Do it.
Three shows makes it hard to do a Win/Loss ratio, and I heard the most of Sugar,so is it unfairly on top? Probably, but Sugar had great moments, even if I’m not sure the totality of the track is next level stuff. Moments of greatness is enough for today. I’m not sure that Black Clover is TTS, as I caught no credits, but my assumption would be since everything else I’ve heard on CrunchyRoll is, so I’d tentatively put that in third.
Why have you started binging?
