The Small Screen diaries: 08/29/26

Hulu has picked up Furious for another season, and The Gentleman (Netflix) is set to return for a second season in a week full of 9/11 docs, football docuseries, Dolly tributes, and box office misses The Mandalorian and Grogu (Disney Plus) and Scary Movie (Paramount), along with straight to streamer titles The Runner (Amazon) and Mayday (Apple). Plus, there’s a spinoff from Martin (I’m not kidding) featuring Tommy Davidson hitting Paramount Plus this week.

TV Shows Watched: Adventure Time: side Quests: S1E1 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Tomb Raider King: S1E3 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, Elle: S1E5 (Amazon) with audio description, Pop Culture Jeopardy: S2E19 (Netflix) with audio description, The rookie: S8E11 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Little House on The Prairie: S1E8 (Netflix) with audio description

Adventure Time: Side Quests- If you like Adventure time, this continuation has audio description by Laura Post. So that’s fun. The pilot is silly, but this franchise is very established. It can do whatever.

Tomb Raider King- It plays like a video game, with quests, power ups, and treasures. Kind of interesting. Still has synthetic narration, but Melvina Babu is rapidly becoming one of my favorite writers.

Elle- Somehow we move past that overly dramatic twist, and Madison comes to visit Elle. Worlds collide. the AD here from Media Access Group is best at describing outfits, which is oddly really a big part of the series.

Pop culture Jeopardy- Final semi-final, moving onto the finals. Only one team got Final Jeopardy right… and me. i did too. The AD here is delightful.

The Rookie- Skip Tracer returns for a silly plot, as john learns from Zuzu that Bailey is in danger, and Chen deals with the zombie she killed. Also, a killer goes free. What is this show? The AD seemed OK.

Little House on The Prairie- Already leaving the prairie. I did love how during the fire their first inclination was to get the women and children inside a wooden building. They’ll be fine…. Roy’s narration here is one of my favorite things of the year. He sounds perfect for this. It isn’t overly performative, it just matches the tone of the show so well. I can literally hear him smiling. The writing is pretty good too.

Best: Nothing was bad. I’ll give Little House the edge, since it was also the finale.

Worst: Tomb Raider King is synthetic voice.
