Box Office Predictions- 6/7-6/9

1) The Internship- 30M weekend, 30M total Everyone in the industry swears this film is tracking at 20M. I have a hard time believing that Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson’s reteaming is that low. But, I guess, I can’t go crazy and say 50M. I’m predicting a solid 30M. The film is PG-13, so grosses won’t be limited. The Internship screened on Saturday for audiences, which is a giant show of faith that audiences are really responding to the film. They’ve avoided showing it to critics, but it doesn’t seem like a critics choice film. Vince Vaughn’s last summer effort, … Continue reading Box Office Predictions- 6/7-6/9

Indie Box Office: ‘Before Midnight’ still cleans up, ‘Kings Of Summer’ debuts strong

Weekend Box Office: A rousing shakeup and ‘After Earth’ bombs

1) Fast and Furious 6- 34.0M weekend, 169.8M total After dominating last week, it should be no surprise that Fast 6 was able to dominate again with not much of a fight from the new releases. The big question next week is The Internship, which just did a sneak preview last night, and swears that audiences love it. We shall see next weekend if they can trump the third weekend of Fast. 2) Now You See Me- 27.5M weekend, 27.5M total A low cost caper film beat out an A-lister’s post apocalyptic actioner. That’s the news story here. Jesse Eisenberg … Continue reading Weekend Box Office: A rousing shakeup and ‘After Earth’ bombs

Friday Box Office: ‘After Earth’ flops in third

1) Fast and Furious 6 After raking in 10.5 million yesterday, Fast 6 seems on track to easily win the weekend again, bringing in another 35 million. That’s still quite a drop from last week, and even slightly disappointing considering the lack of a fight that After Earth has put up. 2) Now You See Me Now You See Me raked in 10M from late Thursday shows and Friday. The film is dramatically overperforming, and is looking at a weekend gross of 27M, above the studio’s projection of 20M. Now You See Me also managed an A Cinemascore (somehow), which … Continue reading Friday Box Office: ‘After Earth’ flops in third

Box Office Predictions: 5/31-6/2- ‘Earth’ battles for the top spot

1) Fast and Furious 6- 45M weekend, 200M total The franchise has been getting pretty good buzz. With such a huge opening, it’s almost impossible to not drop at least in half, which would leave it with about 45M this weekend, probably edging out After Earth and getting to keep the crown for a second weekend. 2) After Earth- 40M weekend Will Smith is still a pretty huge draw in terms of box office. Last summer’s Men In Black 3 opened to 54M, Hancock did 62M, and I Am Legend did 77M. Granted, his box office has been slipping a … Continue reading Box Office Predictions: 5/31-6/2- ‘Earth’ battles for the top spot

Weekend Box Office: ‘Fast’ 1st, ‘Hangover’ a distant 2nd

More box office will come tomorrow, but here’s how everything is shaping up this weekend: 1) Fast and Furious 6- 98.5 Weekend, 98.5 Total 2) The Hangover 3- 42.4 Weekend, 56.2 Total 3) Star Trek: Into Darkness- 38.0 Weekend, 146.8 Total 4) Epic- 34.2 Weekend, 34.2 Total 5) Iron Man 3- 19.4 Weekend, 367.7 Total 6) The Great Gatsby- 13.7 Weekend, 114.5 Total Also doing ridiculous business is Before Midnight, which made 273K from only 5 screens, for a whopping 54,789K per screen average. The full Top 10, with Memorial Day grosses will come tomorrow… Continue reading Weekend Box Office: ‘Fast’ 1st, ‘Hangover’ a distant 2nd

Saturday Box Office Update: ‘Fast 6’ Destroys The Competition

So, Fast and Furious 6 made 39 million dollars on Friday, zooming past all competitors, heading for a 4 day total of around 120M. That’s huge for a franchise on its sixth leg. The Hangover managed 14.5 million in its second day of release. Star Trek: Into Darkness dipped to third with 10.2 million and Epic followed in fourth with 9.1 million (feeding on a drought of family films). Rounding out the Top 5 is Iron Man 3 which banked another 5.1 million, raising its ridiculous total to 353 million. The Great Gatsby managed to add another 3.9 million on … Continue reading Saturday Box Office Update: ‘Fast 6’ Destroys The Competition

‘Furious 6’ opens to 6.5 mil. midnights

Making more than double what Hangover 3 did on Wednesday night, Fast and Furious 6 managed 6.5 million in midnight shows. This also surpasses the midnights of Great Gatsby and Star Trek: Into Darkness, but it falls short of Iron Man 3’s total. Hangover 3 managed only 11.7 million on Thursday, including the midnights, leading many to believe the threequel will fall short of even 50M this weekend. Furious 6 has already made 53.4 million overseas, and will look to continue to add to that sum this weekend. Continue reading ‘Furious 6’ opens to 6.5 mil. midnights

Midnight Box Office: Hangover III pulls in 3.1 in midnight shows

Last night, Hangover 3 managed to do 3.1 million in midnight shows across the country. That’s down from the previous Hangover, as well as The Great Gatsby earlier this summer, and of course Iron Man 3. Trouble ahead for the wolf pack? At a brisk 1 hr and 40 minutes, Hangover is hoping that more showtimes means more box office, as it battles against longer shows with less showtimes. Continue reading Midnight Box Office: Hangover III pulls in 3.1 in midnight shows

Box Office Predictions- May 24th-26th

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and Hollywood is trying to attack you with two brand new sequels to some high-profile franchises, as well as a kids cartoon that could do really well with a complete lack of competition. 1) Fast and Furious 6- 87M Weekend, 87M total Fast Five opened a few years back, in April, and managed about the same box office. However, Fast Five didn’t open the same weekend as a Hangover sequel, and the second weekend of Star Trek. Granted, the buzz for Fast and Furious 6 is incredibly high (it even has a positive score … Continue reading Box Office Predictions- May 24th-26th

Weekend Box Office- May 17th-19th

1) Star Trek: Into Darkness- 70.5 weekend, 84.0 total These are interesting times when a 70.5 opening can be considered a disappointment for the Star Trek franchise. That’s because the film was overhyped, and projected initially to do 100M over four days. This is still a strong opening, and regardless of how you feel about the sequel, it’s on track to break 200M, easily. This next week adds some incredibly fierce competition that will knock it down a few pegs, and will set the tone for a more stable final prediction. Right now, I’m guessing somewhere around 240M, but I … Continue reading Weekend Box Office- May 17th-19th

Box Office Predictions- 5/17-5/19

1) Star Trek: Into Darkness- 85M weekend, 110M total Star Trek technically opens on Thursday, which I think could lead to about 25M in sales. I can’t find any info on midnight screenings, now that they moved up to Thursday, but I would safely add another 5M to that if there were midnights tomorrow night. The first Star Trek opened to 75M, and it’s safe to say it was a crowd-pleaser. There should be more first week business as people have realized that this new series is really good, and accessible to even non-trekkies. Some competition still exists from Iron … Continue reading Box Office Predictions- 5/17-5/19

Weekend Box Office- May 10th-12th- Gatsby Dramatically Overperforms

Even the most aware box office predictors weren’t predicting Gatsby’s phenomenal opening. Most of us had a realistic idea of how many people Baz Luhrmann could appease, and it was nowhere near 50 million. 1) Iron Man 3- 72.4 weekend, 284.8 total It didn’t quite meet my expectation of a 78 million weekend, but it held OK, dropping only 58% in week two. It still proved to be the movie to beat, though all that will change next weekend with Star Trek: Into Darkness cutting into the box office. 2) The Great Gatsby- 51.1 weekend, 51.1 total Massive. I would … Continue reading Weekend Box Office- May 10th-12th- Gatsby Dramatically Overperforms

Box Office Predictions- May 10th-12th- Gatsby Aims For 2nd

This weekend, Iron Man 3 faces some competition from Leonardo DiCaprio’s Great Gatsby. Gatsby isn’t typical summer fare, and targets the demo that made The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom sleeper hits last summer. The difference here is that Gatsby is going wide. No surprise, since it has a bonafide star in DiCaprio. My predictions below: 1) Iron Man 3- 77M, 305-315M total. Iron Man is virtually unstoppable. Normally, big films crumble though in their second week, simply because of heavy upfront business. The first Iron Man dropped a respectable 48%, Iron Man 2 dipped 59%. This one … Continue reading Box Office Predictions- May 10th-12th- Gatsby Aims For 2nd
