1) Fast and Furious 6
After raking in 10.5 million yesterday, Fast 6 seems on track to easily win the weekend again, bringing in another 35 million. That’s still quite a drop from last week, and even slightly disappointing considering the lack of a fight that After Earth has put up.
2) Now You See Me
Now You See Me raked in 10M from late Thursday shows and Friday. The film is dramatically overperforming, and is looking at a weekend gross of 27M, above the studio’s projection of 20M. Now You See Me also managed an A Cinemascore (somehow), which means word of mouth is strong.
3) After Earth
Will Smith was never going to open this at number one against Fast 6, but the fact that he might now lose to a pack of magicians is just embarassing. After Earth made 9.7 on Friday, and only got a B Cinemascore (which seems quite high… but whatever), so audiences are less likely to recommend this to their friends like they will Now You See Me. An opening weekend of 24M is likely, far below the industry projections of close to 40M. It would seem like Shyamalan’s career is likely over, at least for anything that has a budget.
4) Epic
Holding well is the animated Epic, which benefits from being the only kids film in the marketplace currently. Epic should make another 20M this weekend, and will continue to overperform with no direct competition until Monsters University on the 21st.
5) The Hangover 3
Last weeks new comedy has dipped quite a bit in the second week, but yet is still on par with the dip that Hangover 2 had. Grossing 5.2 million yesterday, The Hangover 3 looks to be getting a rather awful 15M second weekend gross.
