The Swimmers
Where I Watched It: Netflix Audio Description Provided By: Post haste Digital Written By: William McDonaugh Narrated by: Tanzi Alexander Yes, the film is about Syrian refugees, and it also looks a bit like none of the actors in the film are stars, so you can be forgiven for thinking this might perhaps be Syria’s entry (or some other country) into the Oscar race. While the characters do speak a lot in their native tongue for the first act of the film, this is a journey of a movie that takes its leads into other countries, where they speak English. … Continue reading The Swimmers
Spirited
Where I Watched it: Apple Plus English Audio Description?: Yes I think Charles Dickens Christmas Carol must be one of the most over adapted works ever, if not the most. The difference between it and say something like Little Women, is that we frequently get the same old story, but with a twist. An example of your not typical Carol would be bill Murray’s Scrooged. Although, Murray isn’t the only one. Even a recent episode of the animated FOX comedy The Great North repurposed A Christmas Carol. I’m sure everyone has their own favorite version, their perfect way this story … Continue reading Spirited
The Too Much TV Roundup- December 2nd
Five shows. Not all had audio description, Guess which ones lost? 5) Wedding Season (Hulu) English Audio Description Available?: No It’s been about a month since I called in to Hulu and had a conversation about the lack of audio description on a show that is a Hulu original. The tech even acknowledged that this was a known issue that Hulu was trying to resolve. Here, it’s December, and the 2nd episode still doesn’t have audio description. This show came out in September. Sometimes, it’s the actions of these corporations that state just exactly how important inclusivity is, and how … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- December 2nd
The Too Much TV Roundup- December 1st
Almost at the end of the year. Final month. I have *a lot* of shows to still catch up on, so we’re just going to have to start making some tough choices. 8) The mole (Netflix) English Audio Description?: Yes I gave this episode a second shot, and I don’t think this show, or perhaps the accompanying audio description does a great job of establishing this large ass ensemble of nobodies that perform tasks. it becomes really hard to follow and try and pick up clues as to who might be shady enough to be The mole. I appreciate that … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- December 1st
The Too Much TV Roundup- November 30th
This one is a riveting roundup between two shows. Which one beat out the other? It’s like the finale of a reality show. 2) Reboot (Hulu) English Audio Description?: Yes While there was nothing wrong with Reboot, in terms of the plot, or jokes, it was just up against an episode of Andor where there were real stakes, and emotional moments.Meanwhile, on Reboot, we saw a trip around the studio lot from a former child star’s perspective, lots of problematic workplace talk about scissoring, and Bri trying to figure out if she’s “sexually fluent”. Episode Grade: A 1) Andor (Disney … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- November 30th
The Too Much TV Roundup- November 29th
Considering how busy i am, I’m actually quite surprised I got five shows in. Huzzah! 5) Rami (Hulu) English Audio Description Available?: Yes I was wondering when they were planning to circle back around and bring that character back into the show. Now, I know they are still around. Episode Grade: B 4) 4) Devil In Ohio (Netflix) English Audio Description?: Yes Oh, surprise of all surprises, the guy who won’t let girls out of his car is from the cult. Didn’t see that one coming. Wow. Huge surprise. I mean, just… Wow. I also learned today, you will not … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- November 29th
The Too Much TV Roundup- November 28th
So, as usual, picking random shows and throwing them against each other creates for a very interesting lineup.once again, lack of audio description lost the battle. 5) The Great North (FOX/Hulu) English Audio Description?: No This time, interweaving plots that involved trying to keep a cactus alive, and another that was simply trying to get Judy to “bee-friend” the new super cool exchange student from Illinois who is oddly obsessed with bees just didn’t work for me. There were some good jokes, like the popular girl not even understanding her own sick burn or where it came from, but for … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- November 28th
The Too Much TV Roundup- November 27th
Welcome back to the roundup. I managed three movies in addition to the shows below, so I’d say it was a fairly productive day. 6) Interview With A Vampire (AMC Plus) English Audio Description?: No So, I’m going to continue to review content from AMC Plus, as they have made a sliver of audio description available, and they need to know why it’s important to continue moving forward. There is not a single reason this show shouldn’t have audio description. It’s a huge new gamble for AMC, one that earned a second season pickup early on, and comes from a … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- November 27th
Slumberland
Where i Watched it: Netflix English Audio Description Provided By: international Digial Center Written By: Liz Gutman Narrated By: Jeannie Lemcheck I had no idea what this was. I knew hit had Jason momoa, and that was it. then, as the film started to unfold, I heard Nemo as the main girl’s name, and I figured this was some kind of Nemo in Slumberland adaptation. Also, it became clear that this fantasy film is meant for families, and is really pretty safe. There are a few nightmare suggestions in here, so maybe not like 5 and under, but I think … Continue reading Slumberland
The Guardians Of the Galaxy Holiday Special
Where I Watched It: Disney Plus English Audio description?: Yes I was thinking about skipping an actual formal review, but hen, that’s what I do. I just don’t think anyone is waiting on reviews to watch this. It’s for Marvel fans. it’s for people who like the Guardians. it’s for people who think a Holiday Special could be fun. i don’t think there’s a demographic ready for this, despite it’s holiday trappings, that will watch this without having seen either Guardians film, or Marvel. And if there were, those people aren’t waiting to see “what the critics think”. Truth is, … Continue reading The Guardians Of the Galaxy Holiday Special
The People We Hate At The Wedding
Where I Watched It: Amazon Audio Description Provided By: The Media Access Group Narrated By: Zambie Page I’ll tell you right off the bat what you need to know. If you’re here because you use audio description, then get ready for some light, but totally appropriate shade. I’m not sure if Page also wrote the script for the narration, but whoever did, I applaud them. Late in the film, one of the characters is on an airplane reading a book. Not a big deal, right? Characters do this all the time. but as the narrator notes for those of us … Continue reading The People We Hate At The Wedding
The Too Much TV Roundup- November 26th
So, only five titles today, but i also knocked out three films with reviews to come. 5) Little Demon (Hulu) English Audio Description?: No When I have five shows, and only one of them did not have audio description, but I generally liked all five, then the show without audio description ends up losing out. This episode saw Chrissy trying to help a friend through mind control gone horribly awry, while her parents found common ground over a dog they used to own together called Bark Wuffalo. And if you haven’t already named your dog that, you have failed. I … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- November 26th
Facing Nolan
Where I Watched It: Netflix English Audio Description?: No For a very brief moment in time, I did the whole baseball trading card thing as a kid. Mainly because I had friends doing it. Really that’s the reason most kids do anything. Their friend has something, so they need it to fit in. So, I became familiar with baseball players of the late 80’s/early 90’s. Otherwise, I really only know some of the biggest names. But, even with my somewhat limited knowledge, i know who Nolan Ryan is, and I was interested in seeing a documentary about his life. Sadly, … Continue reading Facing Nolan
Mrs Harris Goes To paris
Where I Watched it: Peacock English Audio Description?: Yes Near me in Florida, there’s a massive retirement community where movie rules don’t apply. It’s an exclusive age controlled community, so often films that trend toward a younger audience either don’t open, or don’t stay open for very long. Meanwhile, films featuring a predominantly senior ensemble play forever. I don’t remember the title, but there was a film that opened and was still in release there so long that it had actually fallen out of Box Office Mojo’s tracking of all titles in release. It was like The Villages are trapped … Continue reading Mrs Harris Goes To paris
The Top 20 Contenders For Best Director This Year
So, I already gave my first thoughts on Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress. We are on to the Best Director race, and an early look at the top 10 contenders in a very wide open race. I think only my top choice is an actual lock. 1) Steven Spielberg (The Fablemans) Spielberg, who last year was in the race for his first musical with West Side Story, is unlikely to be left off for his look back at this deeply personal part of his life. Even with the film performing very lightly at the box office, a … Continue reading The Top 20 Contenders For Best Director This Year
