The Small Screen Diaries: 08/01/26

A very tiny diary. In case you missed it, I reviewed Cape Fear in its entirety yesterday. I did that after watching all ten episodes of it. In the same day. Needless to say, I didn’t do much else in terms of watching things. In The Hand of Dante

I’d heard about In the Hand of Dante coming out of the Venice Film Festival and knew it hadn’t been especially well received. At the time, though, a lot of the conversation seemed to revolve around the cast and the controversy surrounding their positions on the Israel-Palestine conflict rather than the movie itself. Shark Tale: 20th Anniversary- Will Smith, Jack Black, Robert DeNiro, Renee Zellweger, Angelina Jolie Quick Take: I’m always surprised this didn’t become a franchise. After all, there are two Nut Job movies. Gnomeo and Juliet got a sequel. The Boss Baby had a sequel. How this movie managed to evade becoming a franchise likely has to do with the expense and popularity of the voice cast. Killers Of The Flower Moon

No matter what words I have for this film, it already has won a barrage of trophies, and is a Best Picture nominee this year, among its many other nominations. Of course, it is directed by Martin Scorsese, who earned his 10th Best Director nomination, becoming the most lauded living director.It’s part of the reason streaming services like Apple and Netflix give him massive budgets for films that likely will never make that back. Where I watched It: iTunes English Audio Description?: Yes Narrated By: Darren Polish This film has one of the most obsessively and aggressively annoying sound designs. This, and the Amazon movie Nanny, are both designed to drive you mad by creating sound design that isn’t scary, but so obnoxious you lose your damn mind. Best Of 2016: Directing Awards

For me, when I pick my directors, I think of many different factors. Was the film made better because the director was attached to it? Does the director have a unique voice and/or perspective? How well shot and edited was the film? Did it have a lot of pacing issues? Was the work original and groundbreaking, or just more of the same. Could literally anyone have replicated their work? These are the 10 directors I felt did the best directing job of 2016, plus five more for “Breakthrough In Directing”, which means they either had directed their first feature, or nearly their first.
