Kevin Hart, I’ve come to realize, is an acquired taste. He’s a little like the love child of Eddie Murphy and Michael J Fox. Loud, eager, desperate to please you. Josh Gad, on the other hand, is face value. He’s following in the footsteps of every “average joe” before him. The Wedding Ringer is one of those OK, but not great comedies with big stars. It has some legitimate funny moments, but really it is too tame to be successful as an “R Rated Comedy”. The bar has been raised so much, by films like Bridesmaids, The Hangover, and Neighbors that if you’re going to go for an R-Rated Comedy, you have to go big.
The Wedding Ringer doesn’t go big.
If you’re looking for a slightly above average comedy that somewhat squanders the talents of its leading men, then The Wedding Ringer is for you. No new ground is tread here, which is probably why it opened in January. It’s a decent pick up at Redbox, I suppose.
