Holy shit. Donald Sutherland turns 80 today. Wow. Makes you feel like you didn’t accomplish much today, doesn’t it? And while I won’t be profiling him today, Alex Winter also turned 50. MAN I FEEL OLD NOW. Wow.
Don’t Look Now is probably the one. He’s had such a career, that finding ONE Best Performance, and ONE Iconic Role was hard.
MOST ICONIC ROLE
MASH, but again this was hard. He’s had so many films, I felt like picking MASH was the right call. It was between MASH, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, and (honestly) The Hunger Games, because his role in The Hunger Games has spanned (or will span) four films, and everyone recognizes him now as President Snow. So, whether you agree with it or not, it might NOW be his most Iconic role, but I’m sticking with MASH.
MOST OVERLOOKED PERFORMANCE
Space Cowboys. I actually enjoyed this comedy about a bunch of old astronauts getting a second chance to prove themselves, and Sutherland was great in it. If you haven’t seen it, please do. Honorable mention would go to the ABC TV series Commander In Chief, on which he was great… but it was cancelled after one season, so no one really remembers it.
BEST PERFORMANCE I’VE HEARD WAS GREAT, BUT HAVEN’T SEEN
Six Degrees Of Separation. I’m admitting right now that I’ve never seen Six Degrees of Separation, and I know I need to. Sorry.
The Art of War seems to be the biggest candidate. I vaguely remember him being in it, but the film was awful, so I’m sure this is actually his worst performance.
