2015 In Review: Comedy TV Series

2015 was an excellent year for Comedy, but not on Network TV. Rather, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon expanded their rosters and shook things up. Sure, the networks still make comedies, but it’s hit and miss. I’ve been trying to compile a list of my favorite shows and performances. I only included shows whose current seasons I watched in 2015. So, if you feel like I missed out on Veep or The Big Bang Theory, I probably did. But I do watch a fuckload of TV. And yes, I saw Difficult People, and Casual, and Grandfathered. They just aren’t on this list. This is what I’ve got:

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
If you watched Scream Queens, you could probably fill this section with the cast of that show. I’ve managed to single out three of the actresses here, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lea Michele, and Niecy Nash, all three who brought the funny, and helped make Scream Queens one of the best surprises of the Fall 2015 season. Add to that Jane Krakowski from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Kate McKinnon, who is constantly proving she’s the funniest castmember on SNL right now (don’t believe me, just ask Ryan Gosling), and those are my five picks.

WINNER: Niecy Nash, Scream Queens

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Obviously, Tituss Burgess from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. He created the years most memorable new character. I still have friends singing Pinot Noir on a regular basis. You gotta love Glen Powell‘s Chad Radwell from Scream Queens. And, The Grinder is one of the best new sitcoms, and wouldn’t be without Fred Savage. Going along with the newbies, I’ve decided to keep Andre Braugher from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Ed O’Neill from Modern Family.

WINNER: Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

BEST ACTRESS
I picked all new entries here. Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda from Grace and Frankie, Kristen Schaal from The Last Man on Earth, Emma Roberts from Scream Queens, and Ellie Kemper from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

WINNER: Ellie Kemper, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

BEST ACTOR
Mostly new entries here, with Jeffrey Tambor from Transparent and Andy Samberg from Brooklyn Nine Nine as holdovers. I’ve added Will Forte from The Last Man On Earth, Rob Lowe from The Grinder, and Aziz Ansari from Master Of None.

WINNER: Rob Lowe, The Grinder

BEST COMEDY
And my five picks for Best Comedy Series. South Park, which kept its linear storytelling, and continues to be the best on TV. Scream Queens, The Grinder, Master Of None, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt are all new and the best on TV.

WINNER: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Coming tomorrow, Drama TV Series.
