Final Oscar Predictions

The Oscar nominations are being announced tomorrow morning. Here’s, on record, what I think will go down. I’ve left off the “short” categories, because I honestly have no idea what they’ll pick there.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG:
See You Again (Furious 7)
Til It Happens To You (The Hunting Ground)
The Writings On The Wall (Spectre)
Simple Song #3 (Youth)
Earned It (Fifty Shades Of Grey)

I think these are the five. I think the possible dark horses here are Love Me Like You Do (Fifty Shades Of Grey) and Flashlight (Pitch Perfect 2). It’s a tough category to pick. This might be the only nomination Youth gets.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE:
Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight)
Howard Shore (Spotlight)
John Williams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
Thomas Newman (Bridge Of Spies)
Alexandre Desplat (The Danish Girl)

My wildcards would be Michael Giacchino (Inside Out), Johann Johannsen (Sicario), and Carter Burwell (Carol). Sometimes big names push the smaller ones out, and I think that could happen this year.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN:
Mad Max: Fury Road
Bridge Of Spies
The Martian
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Carol

Wildcards here being, I think, The Revenant, The Danish Girl, Cinderella, and Crimson Peak.

BEST SOUND MIXING:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
The Hateful Eight

Wildcards… I’d say Sicario and Spectre. MAYBE Jurassic World.

BEST SOUND EDITING:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
The Hateful Eight

I’m guessing the same thing here. Same wildcards… Sicario and Spectre.

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Walk

Wildcard: The Revenant

BEST MAKEUP:
The Revenant
Mr Holmes
Mad Max: Fury Road

Wildcard: Black Mass

BEST FILM EDITING:
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant
Bridge Of Spies
The Big Short

Wildcards: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Sicario, and Spotlight.

BEST COSTUME DESIGN:
Carol
Cinderella
The Danish Girl
Brooklyn
Crimson Peak

Wildcards: Mad Max Fury Road, Star Wars The Force Awakens, and The Revenant.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY:
The Hateful Eight
The Martian
Mad Max: Fury Road
Sicario
The Revenant

Wildcards: Carol and Bridge Of Spies.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:
Mustang
Son Of Saul
Theeb
The Brand New Testament
Labyrinth Of Lies

BEST DOCUMENTARY:
Amy
Cartel Land
Listen To Me Marlon
The Look Of Silence
The Hunting Ground

I’m not 100% sold on The Hunting Ground. I think the fact that it’s also in the running for Best Original Song may have gotten it a few more votes. It’s a bit divisive. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it was left off. Wildcards: He Named Me Malala and What Happened Miss Simone?

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE:
Inside Out
Anomalisa
Shaun The Sheep
The Prophet
The Peanuts Movie

WILDCARD: Boy and the World. I don’t think The Good Dinosaur will get nominated. Sorry, Pixar.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
Ex Machina
Inside Out
The Hateful Eight
Spotlight
Sicario

WILDCARDS: Bridge Of Spies, Straight Outta Compton, Trainwreck

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
The Big Short
Brooklyn
Room
Carol
Steve Jobs

WILDCARDS: The Martian and The Revenant.

BEST DIRECTOR:
Alejandro Innaritu (The Revenant)
Ridley Scott (The Martian)
Tom McCarthy (Spotlight)
George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road)
Adam McKay (The Big Short)

I’m going with the DGA nominees. Wildcards: Todd Haynes (Carol) and Steven Spielberg (Bridge Of Spies)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Rooney Mara (Carol)
Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight)
Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina)
Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs)
Helen Mirren (Trumbo)

I think this is the group. I think Vikander is going to cancel herself out of The Danish Girl with Ex Machina, and only get one nomination this time around. WILDCARD: Rachel McAdams (Spotlight)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Sylvester Stallone (Creed)
Mark Rylance (Bridge Of Spies)
Idris Elba (Beasts Of No Nation)
Paul Dano (Love And Mercy)
Benecio Del Toro (Sicario)

This is just a crapshoot. I’m not sure Christian Bale can break through, but he might. I think Mark Ruffalo might still be splitting votes with Michael Keaton. Del Toro isn’t splitting with another actor from his film, I’m betting he sneaks in. Paul Dano is also very iffy. Michael Shannon and Jacob Tremblay might also be left out.

BEST ACTRESS:
Cate Blanchett (Carol)
Brie Larson (Room)
Saorise Ronan (Brooklyn)
Charlotte Rampling (45 Years)
Jennifer Lawrence (Joy)

I don’t think that Alicia Vikander will get a lead actress nomination. There was too much of an early push for her in the supporting category. I don’t think people knew where to vote for her in The Danish Girl.

BEST ACTOR:
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant)
Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs)
Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl)
Matt Damon (The Martian)
Michael B Jordan (Creed)

Jordan might be the surprise here. I think he might beat out Bryan Cranston for Trumbo. I think it’s between the two of them. I think Johnny Depp’s Black Mass doesn’t have enough of a push for him to beat either of them out.

BEST PICTURE:
The Revenant
Spotlight
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Big Short
The Martian
Bridge Of Spies
Brooklyn
Straight Outta Compton
Carol
Inside Out

Those are the 10 I think. I do believe, because the race is so wide, that we might finally see 10 nominees. The only wildcard I’d pick here is Room, but this category is already so tough. I realize it’s ballsy to predict Mad Max, Compton, and Inside Out… THREE crowdpleasers, but they’re all crowdpleasers that people loved. Due to the preferential voting, and the wide open race, we might finally see 10 nominees. Maybe. I’m going for it.

We’ll see what happens tomorrow. I hope I’m right. I like being right.
