The Too Much TV Roundup- May 20th

Yet another great day in television. I haven’t even started to watch Heartstopper, and it has already been picked up for seasons 2 and 3. It didn’t even need my help to survive. Of course, there are dozens of shows I’ve never watched, that keep getting renewed. You can’t watch everything.

1) The Last Days Of Ptolemy Gray (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

third episode in, and I keep getting more invested, and more hooked in this terrific Apple limited that features an amazing performance by Samuel l jackson. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out yet, I recommend it. It’s very weird, but also interesting because of that.

Episode Grade: A

2)The Connors (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

It might be weird for you to see this show ranked so high, but the season finale saw some couples say I do, officially locking in The Connors clan, which the episode brought together in the final sequence that was well described, and pointed out how much this family has changed since their original Roseanne days. New husbands, grandkids, and a new wife for Dan. They say when life gives you lemons, except I don’t think The Connors was ever handed a lemon when they had to shift gears. john Goodman continues to prove himself incredibly adept at being the central character to a widely neurotic family, always adding his own wisdom, often more mature than not, into every situation. This was a great way to cap off the season, and would have almost worked as a series finale. But, luckily they’ll all be back in the fall.

Episode Grade: A, Season 4 Grade: A

3) Better Call Saul (Netflix/ AMC)

English Audio Description Available?: On Netflix

Remember, Netflix waited so long to drop Season 5, I’m actually still trying to catch up on that. Season 5, Episode 5, brought Mike to a random place somewhere south of the border, and had jimmy (or should I say Saul) trying to keep an old man from having his home destroyed so Mesa Verde could build a call center. It was a quirky and fun episode.

Episode Grade: A

4) MR Mayor (NBC.Peacock/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Depending on platform.

Rest In Peace. What an odd way to end a series, but that’s what you get when a series is cancelled. To be fair, this show outperformed Grand Crew, which I couldn’t get into at all, so to see that get renewed over mr Mayor was disappointing. A great cast, and a great production team couldn’t get this to a third season. That’s a wrap.

Episode Grade: A-, Series Grade: B+

5) Halo (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

Finally. Action. An episode loaded with tons of action. It almost felt a little too late, and my recommendation for them going into Season 2 is to find a better balance of action and posturing, because there was a lot of standing around talking in this season, and not as much action as I know fans expected. I have a feeling that this show is rather expensive already, but there are ways to keep action involved, without always putting it on a grand scale. And… was I the only one who wanted Master Chief to die? Was that just me?

Episode Grade: B+, Seasonn Grade: B-

5) Black Gold (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description Available?: No?

I thought the first episode had audio description, but then episode two does not. That was very odd. Very odd indeed. Contextually, the show still is data dumping a whole ton of important information about how Exxon has directed the climate change movement in their favor, much to our detriment. This should be required viewing.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Jeopardy (Syndication)

English Audio Description Available?: No

I got 25 right, but still missed Final. Our winner is now a six day champion.

Episode Grade: B

7) The United States Of AL (CBS/Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

one of two sitcoms I watch on CBS, and it got the axe. I think about the brilliant way this season started, benefitting from the pull out in Afghanistan, and using a series about a soldier who got his translator out of Afghanistan to make a real emotional and impactful connection. Then I flash forward to now, and it’s cancelled. This show had more to offer CBS than they gave it credit for, or even audiences. However, I will say that since she started sticking around, Al’s girlfriend has been slowly ruining this series for me, which was even more evident in what is now the series finale.

Episode Grade: B-, Series Grade: B+

8) Star Trek Picard (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

This was Episode 7 for me. Am I the only one who is less interested in scenes without Patrick Stewart? or is that just me? It might just be me.

Episode Grade: C+
