The Too Much TV Roundup- September 13th

So, what kind of shenanigans did you get yourself into yesterday? Did you watch a ghost turn into a bird and then into a human? i did. it was awesome. Stupid, but awesome.

1) Locke and Key (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’ll be honest and say that if my #2 show had audio description, it would ahve won overall. Sadly, Hulu and FX do not prioritize their blind audience at all. So instead, Netflix, with its rather consistent commitment to audio description, won with episode 6 of the final season, which saw one more villain knocked out of the race, and two good guys (I guess, technically, all things considered) return to the table. Look, if they were willing to work with Dodge toward a common good, they can work with Sam to stop the end of the world. I don’t expect him to live, but this might offer him redemption, and a chance to actually die an not live eternally in a graveyard as a ghost with an old guy who isn’t his relation.

Episode Grade: A

2) What We Do in The Shadows (FX)

English Audio Description?: No

This wedding episode was the best half hour this sitcom has offered, and last week was pretty freaking hilarious. But, with a bit more of a serious tone as Nandor contemplated spending the rest of his life with his bride and planning the perfect wedding, he started to have some introspective moments that made the series all the better. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Anoop Desai as the Djinn, as he’s been fun to have around. Put audio description in this episode, because there were two extended moments where all we got was music, and I have no idea what was going on.

Episode Grade: A- (only because of Audio Description)

3) Physical (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Rose Byrne had another great half hour as she finally actually went to rehab. Of course, her husband is still caught up on the “she cheated with a Mormon” part, but he’s always been fairly useless. This is Rose Byrne’s show that she carries with her every single week, as I have consistently said. I hope if there is a third season, she just takes her daughter, and moves to the other side of the country where they can assemble a proper supporting cast for her.

Episode Grade: A-

4) The Terminal List (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Most of this was just Chris Pratt being hunted in the woods, which was actually a lot of fun for a TV show. However, while they might make it make sense, there are just too many damn flashbacks to the bird flying into the window at this point. I get it. We all remember this event you’ve shown us 7,000 different ways. Stop. It was like, every time there was a lull in action, we got a damn flashback. The flashbacks to his training were actually interesting, but if I see that damn bird fly into that fucking window one more time… your audience is not the guy from Memento. We are able to remember an event we’ve already been shown several times. Enough.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Gutsy (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

It’s not that Hillary and Chelsea are some great interviewing team, though they are still seemingly REALLY enjoying life right now, but the producers assemble some rather terrific interviews, and the editors are very much on point. This episode technically featured Megan The Stallion, but I found the interviews with a former Neo-nazi, mothers who had lost their children to hate, and a comic that receives death threats, to be far more interesting. Whether you like the Clintons or not is rather irrelevant. Two episodes in, and I’m starting to realize, they don’t matter, but the stories their subjects have to tell, do matter.

Episode Grade: B+

6) The Bear (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Hulu still has no AD, and I’m on episode 5. It’s keeping this show from getting good grades, as I can’t 100% follow it. This episode revolved mostly around creating an elevated menu to save the restaurant, and the cousin was still useless.A toilet explodes, and instead of helping, he jus leaves. Fuck that guy.

Episode Grade: B

7) Rap Shit (HBO MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Congrats on a second season pickup. Please do a better job of giving these girls different personalities. When they are apart, each actress clearly has their own thing, but they start to lose their personalities when they’re together and seem to start molding into one. I know this is probably a real thing in life, but it doesn’t help a first season show that you are trying to get to know their characters. the greatest ensemble sitcoms threw together often very different personality types just to make this part easier. I don’t want to compare Rap Shit to any specific show, but you could probably take any long running sitcom and you will see what I mean. That’s really the only thing holding this show back. I did laugh at the M. Night sign, because at first I forgot her name, and I thought they just stole M Night Shyamalan’s limo.

Episode Grade: B-
