Since I live in the path of hurricane Ian, and I don’t know my power/wifi status tomorrow, you’re getting this early. This is actually what I watched today, but would normally write about on Thursday.
1) The Rookie (ABC/Hulu)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
first of all, not only is the Rookie one of the best described shows on TV (definitely network TV), but it was so nice to see the whole gang together again, and in a thrilling Season premiere that saw one recurring character with their life very much in the balance. So glad to have this show back.
Episode Grade: A
2) The Great North (Fox/Hulu)
English Audio Description?: No
A delightful season 3 premiere that featured lots of breaking into song, and an outback style restaurant that is so good, the family just can’t stay away, even if they know it upsets him. Meanwhile, Beef has to learn small talk if he wants to stay in Knife Club. Yes, I love this show.
Episode Grade: A
3) Andor (Disney Plus)
English Audio Description Available?: Yes
This was episode 2 for me, and I love the general vibe we are getting from this show. it’s unlike anything else in the Star Wars franchise, feeling like some kind of light hearted sci-fi Jason Bourne. Except, the villain of this show, the policeman who can’t follow directions, is still poorly fleshed out. Now he has more people under his wing, and the show still hasn’t explained why he’s risking everything to defy the direct orders of his boss. This villain sucks.
Episode Grade: A-
4) The mighty Ducks: Game Changers (Disney Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Another welcome return. The Ducks are back, but Coach Bombay is not. Instead, the Ducks are off to summer camp, where an ex-NHL player (Josh Duhmael) is trying to teach kids excellence. Based on his strategy, I’m assuming the Ducks will end up teaching him a bit more, especially since he has a son who hates being there.A future Duck? probably.
Episode Grade: A-
5) What We do in The Shadows (FX/Hulu)
English Audio Description Available?: No
But, why did I grade this episode lower than I usually do this show? Did I not like the home renovation episode? Actually, it was hilarious… what i could understand of it. unfortunately, due to FX and Hulu failing to provide audio description, all the visual cues revolving around the home renovation were lost on me. So, the episode only kinda made sense. That’s really unfortunate.
Episode Grade: B+
6) LaBrea (NBC/Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
It’s not that labrea was the worst thing, or that it was bad. It’s on a curve for me, because it’s been so long since the season 1 finale that I spent the entire episode trying to remember who everyone was, where they were, what was happening, etc. Yes, i loved the Rhino’s, the new sinkhole, and the ever broadening mystery. But, I’ve literally forgotten who some of these people are. It’s going to take me a minute to get back into it. This is not the first show I’ve had this problem with. It just happens to be at the bottom of this list. Technically, I also watched films today, and this episode was better than any film I watched.
Episode Grade: B+
