The Too Much TV Roundup- 02/21/23

To the likely shock of no one, HBo MAX cancelled another show. So, if you were a fan of Southside, sorry. It’s dead now. It’s in TV heaven. And considering how they love to purge content, if you haven’t finished Southside yet, I’d binge that shit immediately if you are at all interested. I’m not, but you might be. like, call in sick. Trust me, from the guy who stupidly thought he’d be able to finish Let THe Right One In the day after it was cancelled. These streamers no longer give fucks. No more to give.

7) 7) The Equalizer (CBS)

English Audio description?: Yes

I’ve got to be honest, and say i missed the last few minutes as I fell asleep. It was the last thing i watched before bed, so I’m not 100% sure how this ended, but I’ll assume… the. Way every other episode ends? This is a solid show, and putting Mel in the center for once really helped to boost the feeling of the show being back after a long while. It was just a good day of TV, and technically I think the one show that I dozed during has to lose, right?

Episode Grade: B

6) The Ark (Syfy/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

OK. So I’ve learned some things about this show. First, I finally noticed Dean Devlin’s name in the credits, which gave me a smidge of hope. Second, you just have to accept that the cast are not great actors. Not all of them are bad, but sometimes they are thrown material above their pay grade. The writing for the show is actually fine, and they are presenting enough challenges for the crew that it feels like this could become something. It has promise, but i also can’t promise I can tolerate all these actors for the whole run of the show.

Episode Grade: B

5) Emily in Paris (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

A while back, I had read an article that was like “Emily in Paris: Let’s Talk About The Jaw Dropping Finale”. Well, that person has never watched any TV before Emily In Paris, or is a click bait robot. There wasn’t anything surprising about a show that is based on this will they, or when they, relationship between Gabrielle and Emily. The fact that they have given Cami a lesbian loe interest makes her character now even less likely to end up with Gabrielle, so the events in this episode surprised me not. And poor temporary boyfriend Alfie was a nice guy, but this whole show seems destined around eventually pushing Emily and Gabrielle together, not Emily and Alfie. We shall see where that “jaw dropping” finale takes us next season.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Wolf Pack (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Well, I’ve been begging for this show to get interesting for the past two episodes, and it finally does in the third episode, which saw a werewolf clearly stalking the teens, the Pack learning mor about their abilities, a solid showing from Rodrigo Santoro, and plenty of tense action. Was this episode a fluke? We shall find out, but right now, it finally is interesting.

Episode Grade: B+

3) Fleischman Is In Trouble (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I’m not 100% sure this show stuck the landing. I’ll just say that. A very weird show that made me incredibly sympathetic to one man’s cause, like I was watching a new version of Kramer Vs Kramer, then opened up the mental health door, and finally in the end went a little nihilistic for my taste. Some really good acting here, but this show has had stronger episodes.

2) The Recruit (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

One of the things that impresses me the most about the show is that it has the ability to get coverage. What is pulls off, in such a short period of time, always feels like a tremendous leap forward in storytelling as it crams perfectly a lot of location changes with interactions between all the necessary parties to further the plot. It never has a dull moment that serves no purpose. Here, our guy spends most of the episode running around like a mad man, and finally having to sit down at a table and answer questions on a polygraph because Dawn is clearly trying to sabotage him. I’m glad netflix saw the potential here and gave this a second season renewal.

Episode Grade: A

1) Kindred (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

They need to get up out of this place and go home. If for no other reason than to grab some supplies. I’m very much not a gun advocate, but if I was kevin, I’d be armed to the teeth the next time I teleported back, so I could defend myself and free some slaves. There’s so much tension in every moment, and in Cecilia, we watched helplessly as we are reminded of the lack of medical treatment these people had back then.
