The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/13/23

CBS already is talking about not being worried about next season as they have Paramount Plus shows to rely on. Meanwhile, since today is Wednesday, in the middle of June, I feel the need to point out that this is when ABC has decided to drop the second season of The Wonder Years. Clearly, it’s a burn off. With the writer’s strike, any sensible person would have accepted this moving to at least a late summer (August) launch so it could bleed into the beginning of the fall season and give ABC some fresh content. Maybe ABC is planning on running Disney Plus shows.

11) Dead Ringers (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

If I understood this finale, I might rank it higher. I suppose the horror fans will love it for being pretty gory, but I’m just left here wondering what all that talk about climbing back into the other was about. I’m so confused, and I don’t feel the least big satisfied by the conclusion.

Episode Grade: C+

10) Fired On Mars (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: unknown

While every episode has something unique and quirky to offer, this one kinda felt like it offered the least, as the rebels went out to find sustainable sources and got caught in a dust storm.

Episode Grade: B-

9) Designing Women (Hulu)

English Audio Description: No

Status: Ended

Poor jean Smart’s character finds out that her new man is married when his wife hires the gang to redecorate their bedroom as a surprise for her husband. A surprise indeed. You must really feel confident in your marriage when you think your husband has been craving new drapes in the bedroom.

8) Home Improvement (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Ended

Brad finds out that he is being scouted by UNC, and lets that go to his head. Meanwhile, Randy and his girlfriend are trying to avoid an annoying couple their age.Jill has some tips.

Episode Grade: B

7) Mad Men (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

While I’m happy something is on this, the audio description for Mad Men is quite terrible. It is TTS, and constantly drops the sound out anytime it needs to speak. Can we at least have TTS with some balancing? Plus, this episode was a bit sslow. I know the big reveal was that Don Draper isn’t his real name, as his brother finds him, but that kind of felt like the only important storyline, and the stuff the others did was just filler. I couldn’t care less if the other guy got his writing published.

Episode Grade: B

6) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: renewed

Sheldon’s dad really wants his mother-in-law’s Brisket recipe, but she doesn’t like him enough. Problem solved when Sheldon remembers that he has perfect recall, and MeeMaw told him the recipe when he was a baby.

Episode Grade: B+

5) Everwood (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

You should have been able to predict that I would squeeze in an episode of Everwood in honor of Treat Williams. This was the follow up to having his in-laws in town to try and get Ephram to move back to NYC.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Agent Elvis (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

There’s something sad about how they left Priscilla’s character, considering she’s also a producer, but I’m happy they left the door open for a second season. It’s not perfect, but it can be a lot of fun.

Episode Grade: A-

3) High Desert (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

By the third episode, I’m hooked. The energy and humor here is so quirky and original that I’m not sure there’s anything like it. Patricia Arquette’s energy just takes over the series, but her supporting cast isn’t half bad. She’s quick on her feet.

Episode Grade: A

2) Weakest link (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Presumably Renewed

It’s Ron DeSantis’s favorite episode. Drag Queens! Very entertaining, and even though it is basically just a trivia game, the girls gave so much humor to the episode. I think Jane Lynch was truly enjoying herself. Some of the answers were epically terrible. Who wrote Around The World in 80 Days? Chaka Khan. What Baltimore University….? Boston University Lewis and Clark explored….? Lewis and Clark in Space. I’ve never laughed this much through an episode before.

Episode Grade: A

1) Mrs Davis (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

But nothing beats this creative episode which showed Simone’s dad’s last magic trick, had Simone trying to get something from her mom, then stealing it only to be thwarted by her security. Game recognizes game. Plus, Simone had sex and met God. And, to top it all off, Simone was told something by Mrs Davis that just changed everything for Simone. But what was it?
