The Too Much TV Roundup- 07/10/23

Emmy Nominations and a SAG strike are both upon us.

8) The Crowded Room (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

Humor me. If there was no shooting at the beginning, and this was just Seyfried interrogating holland, and learning about his past, with holland occasionally being confused as to why he was there, would you still be watching this? Or, are you hoping the ending will make it worth it? Are you watching simply because the stars are good? Because, this show isn’t a slow burn. That would suggest the potential of fire within that burn. This has no fire, no momentum, and is honest to God one of the slowest fucking things I’ve ever sat through as a limited TV series. It’s almost brazenly so, like it’s challenging the audience to quit. It thinks you won’t. It clearly believes it can stay lost in the weeds. I’m out. This show is awful. Sorry, Tom. Episode 2 didn’t get any better.

Episode Grade: D+

7) Somewhere Boy (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: unknown

Still no AD. It’s a complicated show with a lot of heavy themes. I’m pretty sure it’s not a C+ show, and if I could see, I might be going a or A-. But, it so desperately screams audio description, I’m having a hard time slogging through this. Hulu needs to stop picking up shows from other countries and calling them “originals” if they have no intention of providing accessibility.

Episode Grade: C+

6) Cheers (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Jesus. Strange Bedfellows has a third part? I docked points for being older than Sam Malone. He had a line in here that said he was pushing 40, and what did he have to show for it? And I was like, fuck. I’m older than this ex-baseball player who runs a bar. now I have to blog about this, and what have I done with MY life?

Episode Grade: C+ (for depressing me)

5) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Blanche is worried about dating a guy in a wheelchair. Rose adopts a dog. We’re running out of ideas.

Episode Grade: B-

4) And Just like That (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

You’d think that an episode that revolves around the potential cancellation of Sex and the City would feel more like that was the centric point, but it’s not. It’s because there are now so many characters in this show that the writers feel like they MUST touch base with everyone. SATC was a 30 minute show. AJLT can’t even fit into 30 minutes because there are a billion main cast members now. So, they have to check on everyone’s individual storylines. I still wish that they would downgrade the other two originals to recurring, and let these new faces breathe a bit. I truly believe that would make for a better show. You don’t have to write off Miranda and Charlotte, but what if we didn’t see them every episode? What if Che carried the storyline, and Miranda was her significant other who showed up when necessary? There’s so much potential here, and I can feel it being squandered.

Episode Grade: B

3) XO Kitty (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: yes

Status: Renewed

i know that I’m supposed to feel bad for the little rich girl whose mommy doesn’t love her, but that hoe showed up to Dae’s on Korean Thanksgiving, and she didn’t even know her “fake boyfriend” well enough to know his mother has been dead for THREE YEARS. Like, I see all the trappings of a sympathetic character there, but holy shit. That’s a long time. not three weeks. YEARS. How do you fuck that up? How shitty do you have to be as a person? And going in and trying to show the little girl how to do beauty products means nothing after that. Because right after, she finds Kitty’s gift, and you know she didn’t give that to Dae. I’m really starting to get into this, and even Minu seems to be a decent human, but this show is going to ask me to forgive this closeted lesbian nightmare, and I just can’t do it. Three years? Girl, you need help.

Episode Grade: A-

2) A Small Light (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

If you’ve ever wondered why there are so many things out there where we get to see nazi’s being killed in terrible ways for our enjoyment, it’s because of things like this, an incredibly tense episode where the Gestapo finally find the family. I wanted Neve to pick up a knife and just go to town on the soldiers, but this isn’t the right story for that. That’s why we have Inglorious Basterds.

Episode Grade: A

1) Yellowjackets (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

I’m loving catching up on this. in this episode, Natalie’s abusive father (step-father?) blows his own damn head off accidentally. Such a great moment in TV. After beating his wife, and yelling at his daughter about having the safety on, it was just so well timed. Also, kudos to young Travis, for his ring retrieval moment. And Christina Ricci is so weird in this. I’m loving her and scared of her at the same time.
