The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/26/23

Well, the WGA has recommended that writers end the strike officially, so things will be written again. I don’t expect to see the fruition of this until next year, except in talk shows, but it happened. Also, I’m not ranking Dancing With The Stars, but I wish the show had audio description like NBC’s The Voice now does. I sat through the first couple couples and then gave up.

10) The Ren and Stimpy Show (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I’m mostly doing this for my own personal nostalgic trip, but I have to acknowledge that the first half of this episode, Space Madness, is designed in such a way that it is unwatchable, and with 50% of the show not accessible really on any level, I have to give S1E3 of this the sad and lowly acknowledgement.

Final Grade: Unwatchable

9) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Just Aired Season Finale

I’m still stuck in Season 3, where Bender and Fry sign up for the military so they can buy cheap gum, and are sent to war. Bender ends up being used as a bomb, and he’s set to go off if he says “ass”. It’s a funny episode, except I had no idea that the alien race they were fighting were bouncing balls until a while after they appeared. I kept wondering what the sound effects were. I’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll say it again. This show relies too heavily on sight gags as jokes to not have audio description. And with Hulu taking on a revival, they should commit to making the whole show accessible.

Episode Grade: unwatchable

8) Friends (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

This period where Ross and Rachel are broken up are the dark ages of the show, with Chandler taking up smoking as being a prime example of why this plot line needed to be resolved quickly.

Episode Grade: B-

7) X-Men (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The action sequences in this could really use some audio description, but my nostalgic trip again through this show reminds me that they never use the whole team. Jubilee and Beast were very absent. but, for Days Of Future Past part 2, we did get more Bishop, and a Forge appearance, as well as Avalanche and Pyro. This is also where Mystique claims to be Rogue’s mother. It was a weird time for all of us.

Episode Grade: B

6) Heels (Starz)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renewed

This episode runs a parallel between what Jack is trying to do for his organization in the present, versus what his father was trying to do in the past. There’s very little wrestling here, and the whole thing is basically the most accessible, dialogue heavy episode so far. I’d still prefer audio description, especially with the time jumps, but to not be full of wrestling is a challenge for this show.

Episode Grade: B

5) The Witcher (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

I do believe this was the Season 2 finale, meaning that I’m finally done rewatching and absorbing all of this in time for the new season. I wasn’t thrilled by the finale, but this show always seeks to achieve a lot in a small amount of time.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Chucky (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Season 3 starts soon

Jennifer Tillly does some good work planting ideas in Junior’s head, but he is way too accepting of a sentient good guy doll. I thought the character who died was going to make it a bit longer, but the real reason I knocked some points off was the tone deaf conversation where Lexie literally stands there and has a speech about being family. The chosen family. I’ve come to like her as a character, but we went from bully to family there a bit fast, Lex. I don’t expect great writing, but, come on.

Episode Grade: B+

3) This Fool (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

A hilarious half hour that debates whether or not you should date a single mom, or be nice to her kid who might get attached to you, especially if you live in a garage. you know, the important questions in life.

Episode Grade: A-

2) All In The Family (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I don’t love putting non-audio described titles at the top, especially if there is a strong alternate choice, which today there was. But, this episode was devoted to Edith being scared about the possibility of having breast cancer after a routine doctor’s appointment, and whether or not Archie would still love her. It’s actually kind of an amazing episode, not just for the time period, but for the series, as it really discusses a serious topic very honestly and back in the day, in Prime Time. Jean Stapleton does great work here.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Lost Flowers Of Alice Hart (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

The tide turns. Alice grows up, and she’s furious. Over the course of the episode, we find out why, and there are many reasons. June’s life starts to fall apart as it is built on a web of lies, and even her partner, Twig, can’t reconcile the choices June made. Honestly, the show didn’t make a strong case for June, so I doubt anyone reconciled that June made the best choices. But most importantly, Twig is her life partner, and to hide these major secrets from her, was probably the worst decision of all, and Twig is bound and determined to make June regret it.Episode Gr
