Another celebration of the best of 2023. Since shows can’t be trusted to actually stay Limited, I’ve just rolled them into what I either interpret as Comedy or Drama. Kinda like the Globes. All of these shows have audio description except one, and its first season had audio description. This is more than a Top 10, so rather than try to rank a lot of shows that are very close, I just worried about a winner, and a Runner Up. Are you watching these shows? Let me know in the comments.
My interpretation of Ensemble is sort of like having a really deep bench of talent. Not a show where you can point to the one person keeping it going, but shows where everyone around them is also on fire. These shows have leads, but the leads may not even be the most interesting characters. So, without further ado…
WINNER: The Marvelous Ms Maisel (Amazon)
In its final season, that mattered a lot. The final season made me realize along the way, as supporting cast members were stripped away by the passage of time, how many of them had become part of the Maisel family. The awards have always recognized the same few characters, which means many characters, including Joel, get left behind. Let’s face it, it’s those extra super talented actors, like the underrated Kevin pollack, that help shape this ensemble.
Runner-Up: Breeders (FX/Hulu)
If you know me at all, you know I love Breeders, and consider it one of the most underrated shows on the air. As we also let the sun set on this terrific show, we look back not just on how far Martin Freeman has taken his character from a ball of rage, to the supportive grandfather who is ready to deal out advice. but it’s the evolution of Luke and Ava, who started out as little kids (remember when Luke couldn’t poop in public?) to adults with real problems. Ava came out, and then tried to figure out what that meant to her, while Luke became a father himself, and was utterly terrified. I will miss this show, the grandparents, the parents, the kids, and everyone else who came along the way.
Honorable Mentions (In No Particular Order):
Minx (Starz)- I did put this first, so I can say this started with audio description on MAX, which actually did renew the series, and rescinded it like assholes, and then Starz saved it, but it meant continuing to watch an excellent show with no AD. I do not intend to give many awards this way, to shows without audio description, but it did start with it.
