The Small Screen Diaries- 02/13/24

Happy Valentine’s Day! For this Valentine’s I got you some TV News to start your day. Apple has renewed Invasion for a 3rd season, while Netflix has picked up Survival Of The Thickest for a second season. The latter of the two took way too long, and must have come down to a budgeting wire.

I am shockingly still with Boy Swallows The Universe (Netflix), which is actually better once you get past the pilot. Still, it’s a very odd show, but the 4th episode continues with the boys trying to adapt to living with their estranged alcoholic father, wanting to see their mom in jail, and the reporter looking into their story. The AD here is solid.

Mr and Mrs Smith (Amazon) interestingly named the narrator in the second episode. I was wrong. Not Paula Hoffman. Ingir Tudor is behind this at the Media Access Group. I’m still struggling to find this a comedy. It has some moments where it’s trying to be that, but it’s just not a hilarious show. In the second episode, our leads have one scene where they have to act like dogs, and I’m like… is this what is classifying this show as a comedy? It’s a solid spy action series with an occasional moment of brevity. It’s also making me like Maya Erskine.

True Detective: Night Country (MAX) delivered more blows, with the loss of some more characters. this mystery is really grabbing me, and while I’m still wishing there wasn’t a supernatural element to this, I’m optimistic that this is just a charade, and maybe there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation. Carly Reyes as Navarro deserves an Emmy nomination this year. I actually would prefer this show to either get snubbed, or for her to get in. My fear is that Jodie Foster feels like the easy pick, and the lesser known half of the leads won’t get in, but her work over the last five episodes has been stellar.

I also started Season 4 of Veep, where Selina is now President, and I’m shocked she hasn’t fired Mike. That debacle with her State of The Union should have had Mike trying to find his way back into the inner circle.

I’ll mention once, since it doesn’t have any audio description, that it’s nice to have Jon Stewart back on The Daily Show (Paramount Plus), even if it is just once a week. I have a feeling Monday episodes will always have higher ratings, and this hopefully will lead to something more permanent for Stewart. I’m still shocked Apple cancelled his show.

Say Something!
