Kicking off the Small Screen Diaries for the day, in first place, is the exceptional limited series Last Seen on Apple TV+, which I finished today. So this is the series finale, unless they, for some reason, decide to make a second season, which seems to be happening to a lot of limited series right now. Kicking off the Small Screen Diaries for the day is the acknowledgment that the Gotham Awards announced their nominations yesterday. In terms of precursors to the Oscars, the Gotham Awards are a little like how we have Groundhog Day, where we entrust the weather to a groundhog because that’s how it’s been done all these years. The Small Screen Diaries: 10/20/26

Kicking off today’s Small Screen Diaries with a little bit of renewal news that I’m incredibly indifferent about, mostly because the current season is dreadful. Well audio described, but absolutely dreadful. Not surprisingly, FX has ordered a 14th season of American Horror Story. You would think that 13 might have been a logical conclusion for the series, considering the significance of that number to the horror genre and just how long this franchise has been running, but apparently they’re going to keep this thing going, pedal to the metal. The Small Screen Diaries: 10/07/26

Netflix has been on a bit of a roll with series renewals and cancellations lately, and today is no exception, thanks to the early renewal of The Hunting Wives for a third season. When a streaming service is comfortable with a show’s budget, and social media reactions consistently suggest that investing in its future is worthwhile, making an early renewal decision is smart. As I’ve noted before, and as many others have pointed out, the longer audiences have to wait between seasons, the more likely they are to lose interest. The Small Screen Diaries: 09/24/26

I think the biggest, and really only relevant, TV news to kick this off today is the fact that Netflix has once again proven the term “limited series” means absolutely nothing. They have picked up The Beast in Me for a second season. Originally billed as a limited series, the show is coming back with Claire Danes set to return as Aggie Wiggs following her Emmy-nominated work in the first season. Once again I’m running down the sixty shows on my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week, which was fairly slow for new shows, are The Sandman (Netflix), All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix), The Office (Peacock), Such Brave Girls (Hulu), Nautilus (AMC Plus), Dexter (Paramount Plus), and Prison Break (Netflix). Apple has renewed Invasion for a 3rd season, while Netflix has picked up Survival Of The Thickest for a second season. The latter of the two took way too long, and must have come down to a budgeting wire. It it looking like the solution to paying actors more isn’t for people in the boardrooms to not continue to make absurd amounts of money in non-creative positions managing creativity, instead the solution is to kill that creativity. Your random TV news for the day is for Blue Bloods fans. Not surprisingly, CBS finished contract negotiations and ordered a 14th season of the show. CBS required massive cost cuts, which meant the returning actors who have been on the show for 14 years had to take a pay hit. So now Tom Selleck really needs you to buy his reverse mortgages.
