The Small Screen Diaries- 02/24/24

Man, i hope the SAG awards stay on Netflix. no commercials. Say anything you want. Fantastic. The predictable awards were predictable, and the other trophies painted a picture of the Actor and Actress race. Cillian Murphy has now won both the BAFTA and SAG, defeating Paul Giamatti at both. I cannot shake the feeling that Giamatti is winning for The Holdovers. It may just be because of how much I adore Paul, but I love both films and performances. On the actress side, Lily Gladstone closed the gap between her and Emma Stone by winning the SAG Actress trophy, while Emma Stone won at BAFTA earlier. Gladstone was ignored by BaFTA altogether, but I’m not sure that’s stopping her. I just think it feels really early in her career for Emma to be a two-time Oscar winner, while her other 4 nominees (including legendary Annette Bening) have never won.

In the TV world, The Brothers Sun (Netflix) got closer to a conclusion as a meeting of the triad heads went horribly awry. Most of the main cast survived, but one semi-main character did not, as well as a character who was introduced and given stuff to do in the same episode they died.

Quantum Leap (Peacock) is moving closer to a destructive Season 2 finale, and a likely devastating one. I know technically it aired, but I only watched the first of the two episodes. Ben crossed paths with Hannah one more time, and I’m fairly certain now that Gideon is not the real name of this season long villain. With all the members of Quantum Leap now out, and him in charge, what does that mean for Ben? Hopefully for NBC it means a renewal, and they learned their lesson from the massive decades long fan backlash from how the last show ended. This reboot is a way to bring home not just Ben, but if they know it’s the final season, they could bring home Sam as well. I really don’t think Scott would turn down the opportunity to right that wrong for fans of the original show.

I finished What If? (Disney Plus) on the 9th episode, which is an odd count. It was a mixed season for me, because I thought there were some really strong early episodes, but later on I had some ones I didn’t care for, but they all looped into the plot. There was one episode I’m still not sure what characters those were, or what they were from.

Not Dead Yet (Hulu) had a bit more description in the third episode. I feel so bad when I mention the clear decline in quality, because the narrator here is someone I’ve heard before, and I do really enjoy her work. But there is a noticeable dip in quality here, which is something that I can only say of one other ABC series right now. And that show is baffling as it is ABC’s crowning achievement right now.

Masters Of The Air’s (Apple Plus) fourth episode was still on par with the others. It offers an interesting look at WWII pilots, and in this episode, talks about that 25th successful flight and what that means for any who achieve it.Should they achieve it. But, this is just episode 4, it’s a war drama, and we have a way to go here. Laura Post’s narration is still delicious.

And I squeezed in Episode 2 of Life and Beth (Hulu) with Beth and John headed to Essence fest to get married. That is the plot. I did not make that up. Their friends come along, and Beth clearly is dealing with something the whole time, but there is this really odd inherent niceness in John, even though he’s often utterly bizarre.

Say Something!
