After trying a new theme for a day, the genies finally figured out my original theme was Gazette. So, we’re back. The original theme. Let me know if something is still wrong, but this is the theme I had for ten years. Visually, I don’t know if I need to play around with anything to get it back to where it was, but there should be a search bar now.
TV Shows Watched: Foundation: S3E2 (Apple Plus) with audio description, Building The Band: S1E5 (Netflix) with audio description, Stick: S1E7 (Apple plus) with audio description, Revival: S1E4 (Peacock) with audio description, Sullivan’s Crossing: S1E3 (Netflix) with audio description, Ginny and Georgia: S2E3 (Netflix) with audio description, The Art Detectives: S1E3 (Acorn) no audio description, and Breaking Bad: S1E10 (Netflix) with audio description
Foundation- That scene with The Mule and the little girl had me. I was on pins and needles reminding myself “they wouldn’t do this…”, but maybe they would. The fact that their new villain is so overpowered and villainous that you believe he could do that is a powerful moment. In the audio description realm, I liked how they hid the Prime thing inside of one of the characters. She just kinda opened up, and they just left it there, like that is totally normal in the world of Isaac Asimov.
Building The Band- Allison could have gone for the super group, but alas. She just chose a trio. We also hear a lot from Allison, and from someone who watches a lot of this type of show, Allison is either about to have a hero or villain arc, because she talks way more than her band mates. She’s also very opinionated and every reality show needs at least a foil, if not a full on villain. I think the format for this episode felt jerky, and considering the ten episode spread, we don’t see as much of the development phase before half of them do their second performance. The rushed feel of the episode gave the audio description less moments to find moments. It isn’t bad, but the episode itself might be the least interesting so far.
Stick- This had me. Episode 7 just opens right on Price back in the day, and since we haven’t directly been told the age at which Jet dies, every moment feels like it is heading to something breathtaking. i felt like the writers knew that, and the director found just the right needle for this thread. Perfect. Change nothing. even the rest of the episode after that was a bit of a reenergizing and course correction. The audio description is nice, and I appreciated it a lot in the flashback.
revival- Campy, horror show that is not great, but kind of fun. It has some heavy ideas it tries to play with, but it is a SyFy series, not an Aaron sorkin prestige drama. the audio description here is never great, and I’m just beating a dead horse at this point. The sad thing is, whoever this narrator is, I like her voice, but she gets saddled with some truly awful description, to the point where I now associate her voice with mediocrity. It’s like watching a good actor do a lot of really terrible straight to video movies, and you can’t figure out why they’re stuck only in this mode.
Sullivan’s Crossing- I’m taking comments. Why do you like this? Why is this a three season Canadian hit? This feels like Hallmark channel tried to rip off virgin River, which in itself is a rip off of hallmark’s content. It’s a facsimile of a facsimile. I’ll quantify my thoughts on the audio description to say it is very average, not great, and is balanced slightly under what other tracks would be. Like, if sound was on a scale of 1-10, and all audio description typically shot for being at a 5 in the mix, with some films maybe kicking it up a tad to a 5.5 or 6, or a 4.5 or 4, this feels like a solid 4, which somehow doesn’t fit the series.
Ginny and Georgia: Man, I really don’t like Georgia. As a character. Every time her daughter reveals that she knows some dark secret about her mom, Georgia just flies off the handle the other way. She doesn’t know the word quit, and has a hair trigger. Like, in this episode, Ginny takes one of the fake credit cards under Austin’s name that is destroying his credit score, and buys Austin a gift, revealing to her mom that she knows about the credit cards. then, when Georgia storms into her room, instead of having a conversation about poor life choices, she just throws more bullshit on the fire, and tells Ginny that she’s afraid of her. Really? last time I checked, only one of you probably killed their husband. The audio description was fine. no notes.
The Art Detectives- Well, a bit harder to follow again. Like, someone was watching something, and got struck, and that’s at the top. sort of the inciting incident. I had a tough time. I just realized this stars Stephen Moyer (true Blood), who is still married to his co-star Anna Paquin after fifteen years. In lieu of a review, you get a fun fact! Make things accessible.
breaking Bad- A really great audio description track. the scene with Jesse and the old man at the police station definitely takes a turn. A gross one. but, we did describe it. Also, near the beginning, with how Walt decides to reintroduce himself to the world, that was also really specific. The attention to detail here is great.
