The Small Screen Diaries: 09/05/25

TV Shows Watched: The Buccaneers: S2E7 (Apple plus) with audio description, Wednesday: S2E6 (Netflix) with audio description, NCIS: Tony And Ziva: S1E1 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, Long Story Short: S1E4 (Netflix) with audio description, Sausage Party: S1E4 (Amazon) with audio description

The Buccaneers- I definitely felt with the last episode that The Buccaneers had finally reached its true potential, and with this episode, all of the strong subject matter they have opened up until now is paying off. the season’s penultimate episode has Nan’s mother filing for divorce from her husband, and she has to have proof. Mind you, this is the time period where there are no text messages, no lurid photos, and even no DNA test to prove Nan’s paternity when her own father tries to suggest she may not be her father, as if this couple just randomly adopted or stole a child neither of them were parents to. The lawyer on her father’s side is a perv, and in a courtroom full of men, you feel just how strong these women have to be to get this divorce passed. I’m really hoping Apple doesn’t cancel this show, because it has finally started to embrace its dramatic potential, even if the cast feels like they were rejected from Pretty Little Liars.

Wednesday- I’m adoring Agnes. I also love the totally random musical number in here. I’m not sure what on earth anyone was thinking, but sure. Luckily, it has excellent audio description. this episode expands more on Slirp and the Hydes, as well as Enid’s problem from the last episode, and why Wednesday doesn’t have her powers (and the interesting thing is how she goes about trying to fix it but it backfires). I love Wednesday, and I love the audio description. Some really lovely work.

NCIS: Tony and Ziva- First, there was JAG. Then NBC cancelled JAG. Then CBS saved it. Then JAG spunoff NCIS, which led to NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, NCIS: Hawaii, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Origins, and now NCIS: Tony and Ziva. You also need to know I’ve seen almost none of that. I did watch and review the two-part pilot for NCIS: Origins, and back in the day I watched the first 8-10 episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles. That’s my entire interaction with the show. So, I had a hard time getting into a show with characters I didn’t know, but the audio description seemed to be fine.

Long Story Short- Another Liz Gutman written AD track (she also wrote Wednesday) in the same day. I like this show. I don’t love it, but it is very clever at times. I think Netflix should continue to let this one breathe and produce more episodes.

Sausage Party: Foodtopia- This one is fun. It’s just silly. The audio description is trying. I think there’s a lot going on, and a lot of dialogue, but the audio description is trying to make the best choices it can. I recognize that. I actually think the second season is creatively stronger than the first.

Say Something!
