The Small Screen Diaries: 08/15/26

John Stark

Coming up this week, a bit of a slow week, Lanterns (HBO) premieres tonight, Outer Banks (Netflix) returns for a final season on Thursday, with Conan O’Brien Must Go (HBO) dropping on Friday. Disney is celebrating itself all week long with various content on Disney Plus, and features like Passenger (Paramount) and Mother Mary (HBO MAX) hit their streamers. I also believe THe Christophers (Hulu) is dropping this week. The Bear: Season 5

John Stark

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. That’s the phrase, anyway. But here, it’s also the question, because I already reviewed the fifth and final season of The Bear once, and I still didn’t feel like I adequately explained why it didn’t work for me. Then I looked at that 97% Rotten Tomatoes score and realized just how far into the minority I’m going to be when I put up a Rotten review for this show. So I wanted to come back and really pin down why. The best explanation I can give is surprisingly simple: Season 5 … Continue reading The Bear: Season 5

House Of The Dragon: Season 3

John Stark

House of the Dragon, in many ways, has an opportunity to actually end with its fans pleased. With only four seasons planned and the source material already locked in place, the series does not face the same future Game of Thrones did, where eventually they ran out of source material and had to go their own way, dividing fans on the things that happened along the way and ultimately leading to a final season that left people quite cold. There was even a petition with over a million signatures asking HBO to remake that final season. I don’t think that’s … Continue reading House Of The Dragon: Season 3

The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 4

John Stark

I’m more than happy to finally jump in and add my thoughts on The Lincoln Lawyer now that I’m on the Tomatometer. It’s a show I’ve enjoyed watching for four seasons now, and even though it’s heading into its fifth and final season, it’s remained one of Netflix’s most consistently entertaining dramas. Season 4 picks up immediately after the cliffhanger ending of Season 3, with Mickey Haller becoming the prime suspect in a murder after a body is found in the trunk of his Lincoln. That storyline dominates the entire season, forcing Mickey to defend himself against all odds, first … Continue reading The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 4

I first watched this back in December as part of A24’s awards consideration package. While I did get a few screeners from A24 last year, Pillion sadly wasn’t one of them, and there was clearly a lot happening. I really wanted to wait to review it until I got the audio description, and now in time for Pride month, Pillion: Unrated is on HBO MAX with audio description! Control Freak

John Stark

What I can say about Control freak is that it has good audio description. Roy Samuelson is narrating this, and while he’s pretty much his consistent usual strong performer, this is a horror film, so the devil in these details belongs to the audio description writer. For a film that isn’t pervasively gory, but does have fleeting moments, and even some attempts at jump scares, the writing is strong. From describing pus coming out of a wound, to the manifestation of a demon, and an intense drowning flashback, this is a very well written film considering its genre. What it isn’t, … Continue reading Control Freak

Fancy Dance

Lily Gladstone is having her moment. It is excellent to see her out front, gaining name recognition as an indigenous actress. Here, we have a film steeped in tribal culture, and it is told from a member of the Seneca tribe herself, Erica Tremblay, in her feature directorial debut. Apple Plus, I suppose out of gratitude for Lily Gladstone killing those flower moons, is carrying it. The narration is Roy Samuelson, who is everywhere these days. Fancy Dance is very much a representation effort for indigenous artists of North America. The movie begins with a thanks/certification from the Cherokee nation, … Continue reading Fancy Dance

This feels like the film that should have been the first release of 2024. We always seem to need to sacrifice and suffer through a mediocre or terrible horror film to start every year, like a ritual sacrifice. I also sat through a barrage of reviews trashing this film, so when I finally got around to Imaginary, I was ready to believe that this would be battling my eventual thoughts on a Winnie The Pooh: Blood and honey sequel for worst picture. I won’t bother you with my scattered thoughts on the original Road House. I found the film, watched it again, but it didn’t have audio description. I remember watching the original when I was maybe 10-12 year old, and it was a cable edit. So, no sex, trimmed down graphic violence, and weird substitutions for cursing. Then, some 30-ish years later I watched the original again, without audio description as a refresher. it is an action film, so it wasn’t very helpful, but it triggered some memories.I kinda just really remembered how badass Patrick Swayze made it look as a … Continue reading Road House (2024)

Surprisingly, around the presents, phone calls, food, and other holiday shenanigans I managed 5 shows, and two movies. Not bad. Obviously, there wasn’t any major news coming out of Hollywood. Could you imagine if your show got cancelled on Christmas? Damn. 1) Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Limited After figuring out that Scott may not be dead, Ramona goes and visits Scott’s ex girlfriends to see if they have any info to offer. The list is short. Episode Grade: A- 2) The Santa Clauses (Disney Plus) English Audio Description?: Yes Status: Unknown Santa has to … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup- 12/25/23

Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed

John Stark

Where I Watched it: MAX English Audio Description provided By Point360 Narrated By: Roy Samuelson Adding to the ever growing list of documentaries from this year centered around famous celebrities, we now have a Rock Hudson documentary. If you were born in the last 20 years, he was like the Matt Bomer of his day. Except, we all know Matt Bomer is gay, and Rock Hudson did his career from the closet. As a film buff, i was totally here for a documentary that focused on Rock and his career. I was hoping for some great insight, maybe learning about … Continue reading Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed

The Too Much TV Roundup: 03/13/23

John Stark

First off, I wanted to start off todays list by stating that yesterday, when I mentioned the Oscar’s Red Carpet, the way I chose to phrase my snarky comments made it almost sound like I didn’t like the audio description team. My comments were directed specifically at the hosts responsible for asking inane questions, like how Hugh Grant enjoyed his cameo in Glass Onion. Now with that out of the way, here we go. 8) Animal Control (FOX/Hulu) English Audio Description?: No This is one of those shows where the lead actor has bought it some grace period, but I … Continue reading The Too Much TV Roundup: 03/13/23

Shotgun Wedding

John Stark

Where I Watched it: Amazon English Audio Description Provided By Deluxe Narrated By: Roy Samuelson I would love to control Jennifer Lopez’s acting career. Like, feed me her scripts, and I’ll choose the projects. I know being seen and admired still at her age is an achievement. Running around doing a romcom on a tropical island a guy 17 years younger than her seemed like a catch, but then, that co-star had some problems with…. Normal stuff… like DM’s and cannibalism. So instead of trotting around with someone who reminds her audience how coveted of a starlet she still is… … Continue reading Shotgun Wedding

This Place Rules

John Stark

Where I Watched It: HBo MAX English Audio Description provided By: point360 Narrated By: Roy Samuelson I saw this over a month ago. I watched so many films over my winter break, plus the films I continue to watch, that catching up on reviews has been a bit of a nightmare. So, pretend this review happened a month ago before the allegations against Andrew Callahan came about. To be respectful to those currently in that state of affairs, i will be making this short, because it’s hard to be effusive about someone’s work while they are also in the middle … Continue reading This Place Rules

It’s A Wonderful Binge

John Stark

Where I Watched It: hulu English Audio Description Provided By: Pointe 360 Narrated By: Roy Samuelson Many moons ago, Nostradamus predicted that two children of the devil would be born, and unto the world, they would completely miss the boat on how to make parody/spoof films, and thus their reign of terror would result in a series of films that are universally despised. This includes everything from the aptly titled Date movie and Epic Movie to Meet The Spartans and The Hungover Games. If you told me they directed this, i would not be shocked. This film, which shockingly features … Continue reading It’s A Wonderful Binge

The Tree Of Life

John Stark

Where I Watched it: HBo MAX English Audio Description Provided by: Point 360 Written By: Connor DeWolfe Narrated By: Roy Samuelson I’ve seen quite a few documentaries this year, and I have no idea which ones are even eligible for Oscar’s consideration. but, if there is any justice in this, The Tree Of Life will make the cut. It’s sad that this film exists. It exists only because a racist walked into a synagogue and decided to start shooting people based on his anti-Semitic beliefs. Had that never happened, this documentary would not exist. Really, any documentary based on a … Continue reading The Tree Of Life

Matriarch

John Stark

Where I Watched It: Hulu English Audio Description Provided By Point 360 Narrated By: Roy Samuelson I laughed basically all the way through my YouTube review version of this. Not because the film is funny, but because it is totally and completely bonkers. Yesterday, in the real world, I was mentioning some of the more recent titles I had seen that felt wholly original as horror titles, and not just retreads, and that’s half the reason I gave Matriarch decent marks. I’m still, a week later, not sure what I watched. I don’t know that I will ever fully understand … Continue reading Matriarch
