The Small Screen Diaries: 05/11/26

Amazon gave a very early renewal to Reacher for a 5th season, with Season 4 set to premiere later this year, but a date has not been set. Also, ABC confirmed the pickup of The Rookie: North, and it plans to air both the new spinoff and The Rookie back-to-back starting at midseason.

TV Shows Watched: Lord Of The Flies: S1E4 (Netflix) with audio description, The Count Of Monte Cristo: S1E8 (PBS) with audio description, Top Chef: S24E6 (Peacock) with audio description, Will Trent: S4E9 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Marshals: S1E5 (Paramount) with audio description, and LAst Week Tonight: Most Recent (HBO MAX) no audio description

Lord Of The Flies- I didn’t love it. I would lightly recommend it. I plan on reviewing this. I also did not love the AD. The mix wasn’t good, and the audio ducking made me wonder if it was secretly TTS. I never heard the AD credits.

Count Of MOnte Cristo- I loved this literary adaptation, and thought it made good use of its 8 episodes, though some of the casting and passage of time had me occasionally scratching my head. Otherwise, good stuff. Media Access Group did some lovely audio description.

Top Chef- I’m a bit behind, but this episode had a barbeque cookoff, and the losing team lost someone from the competition.

Will Trent- Will certainly did have a case, but the focus was on Wormwood, who was trying to right a wrong from the past before the clock ran out. Solid episode, and great AD from Roy Samuelson.

Marshals- Henry is trying to pin something on Casey, and the gang ain’t having it. Does he not understand, without Casey, there is no series? Like, he has no job? If there was any member of Marshals less likely to be fired or die, it is Casey. It is a Yellowstone spinoff, so you need a Yellowstone character to get it going. Maybe in like Season 7 if Luke Grimes wants to go do something else, but not midway through the first season. Knowing these things creates low stakes situations.

Last Week Tonight- John Oliver explains why we should be worried about shadow dockets. Not just because we disagree with them, but because they are being overly used, broadly, and circumnavigating having a real trial with an actual judgment and full opinions written.
