The Small Screen Diaries: 10/03/26

John Stark

Kicking off the Small Screen Diaries for the day, let’s take a look at the week ahead and some things you might be interested in, because even though network television is not nearly as prominent as it used to be, it still means a ton of shows are headed your way, all at relatively the same time, either brand new or returning for new seasons. That is very much the case this week, with CBS returning essentially its entire lineup, including hits like Tracker, Elsbeth, Fire Country, Sheriff Country, Boston Blue, FBI, CIA, NCIS, NCIS: Origins and Marshals, as well … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 10/03/26

Kicking off the Small Screen Diaries for the day, I can announce that Amazon is sticking with the totality of the Jack Reacher franchise, with Reacher being renewed for a sixth season while Season 5 is still in production. Its spinoff, Neagley, was also just renewed for a second season. So, at this point, the anchor for Amazon is clearly this franchise, and likely Reacher will go on for however long Alan Ritchson wants it to. He continues to star in projects that are both streaming exclusives as well as theatrically released titles, and until he feels like he’s firmly … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 10/01/2026

Normally, when I do the Small Screen Diary, I start with the actual order in which I watched the shows. Today, I actually want to throw American Hostage, Season 1, Episode 1, right up at the top. This is the new MGM+ drama, and it was actually one of the later things I watched during the day, but it also had one of the more interesting audio description tracks. I didn’t get to listen to the credits at the end, so I don’t have the full AD information yet, but some choices are definitely being made here. This is the … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 09/20/26

Yesterday… was nuts. I’m amazed I watched anything. TV Shows Watched: Lanterns: S1E2 (HBO MAX) with audio description, Black Clover: S1E2 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, Solar Opposites: S6E9 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Strip Law: S1E10 (Netflix) with audio description Lanterns- Did we just learn in this episode that Zoey is black? Probably could have gotten that piece of info earlier. I don’t think her intro at the bar in Episode 1 described her, so it forced me into defaulting her into redneck white lady, which she apparently is not. If studios don’t want ethnic description in the AD track, … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 08/24/26

Jim Rash, best known for playing the Dean on Community, along with his years spent at the Groundlings, and that time he won an Oscar with Nat Faxon for writing the screenplay to The Descendants, is making his solo feature directorial debut. He and Faxon broke out and made the excellent The Way Way Back, and followed that up with the not so excellent Downhill. But, Rash proves he still has a lot to give in this film he wrote and directed, which is not adapted from anything. It does feel so much like a play, like Rash was trying tow rite … Continue reading Miss You, Love You

While I don’t think the first two seasons of the show were amazing, this third season seems at conflict with itself. it does everything from retread, to completely ignore character structures that have been set up … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: 09/21/25

The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings

John Stark

Once again I’m running down the sixty shows on my broad watchlist. Joining the list this week, which was fairly slow for new shows, are The Sandman (Netflix), All Of Us Are Dead (Netflix), The Office (Peacock), Such Brave Girls (Hulu), Nautilus (AMC Plus), Dexter (Paramount Plus), and Prison Break (Netflix). I wrapped some shows, and anything that would rank outside the top 60 dies. WINNER: Squid Game (Netflix) with audio description- I knew I was going to lose my favorites. After the tragic uprising didn’t work last season, it meant playing out Squid Game till the end. I’m only … Continue reading The Small Screen Diaries: The Weekly Rankings
