The Small Screen diaries: 09/13/26

TV Shows Watched: The Walking dead: Dead city: S3E8 (AMC Plus) no audio description, Tomb Raider King: S1E6 (CrunchyRoll) with audio description, My brilliant Career: S1E6 (Netflix) with audio description, The Shards: S1E4 (Disney Plus) with audio description, Have I Got News For you: S5E1 (HBO MAX) no audio description, jeopardy Masters: S4E3 (Disney Plus) with audio description, The paper: S2E1 (Peacock) with audio description

Dead City- Already reviewed, but 1 of 8 episodes with audio description is not accessibility. If eight kids were dropped off at day care, and one survived, that daycare doesn’t remain open.

Tomb Raider King- So much like a video game. In this episode, the main guy (Juon?) fights Anubis. Melvina Babu is writing this for Global 3, and I love their writing. Some really good stuff. Synthetic, but great writing.

My Brilliant career- Finished and reviewed. Audio description by VSI London.

The Shards- I don’t understand this series. I don’t know what it wants. I don’t know what its objective is. It isn’t the worst thing I’ve seen, but I would struggle to recommend this. the audio description is fine, but the show lacks a North Star.

Have I Got News- No audio description, but still funny if this is your thing.

Jeopardy Masters- The AD is making bold choices finally, though it would have been nice to have the AD swing in for that final leaderboard, as Ken reminds us that only four advance, but only verbally names the top 3. You came so close.

The Paper- I forgot Dave does this show. IUNO is doing the track, and this is one of those tracks people will love/hate. As it is sometimes with Dave’s work, he matches the tone of the show so much, that when it is a comedy, he actually accentuates the comedy. IUNO, who is taking big swings also with Five Star Weekend, is writing a bit more interpretive script here, and Dave leans into it. Personally, this is very much my vibe, and I love his work, but I’ve read the comments from others online, and some people don’t like moments like the one where they return from winning the award, enter the room with a celebration, and the AD says they need to read the room. I don’t care, but I’ve seen people who do, thus it is worth mentioning.

Best- That being said, The Paper, for me, was far and away the winner. No contest. In a battle of human narration versus synthetic, Dave Wallace is the strongest example of what a human can do that synthetic just can’t.. yet.

Worst- I gotta say, I know Have I Got News for you doesn’t have audio description, and it never told me it did, so the fact that Dead City had eight episodes labeled with audio description, and only one had it, is a terrible ratio. it has to be the loser here.
