Well, I squeezed some shows in today for your viewing pleasure. At least one is a limited series that now is totally done. But did it top the list?
1) Loot (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
This was actually a pretty close race with not really a clear front runner, but of the seven programs I watched, Loot’s third episode, which featured Maya Rudolph at her absolute finest doing a “Hot Ones” interview, nudges out the rest of the shows. there were some contenders, for sure, but the singular funniest moment had to be that.
Episode Grade: A
2) Fairfax (Amazon)
English Audio Description? Yes
i could have put Fairfax on top this week just for that Circle Of Life parody beginning. It’s a little show that I’m not sure anyone is watching, but for an animated show with a cast of characters that are kids being voiced by adults… this is funnier than Big Mouth. And you’ll feel better about yourself.
Episode Grade: A
3) Love Victor (Hulu/Disney Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
It’s actually a testament to how strong the ensemble in the show is when you realize you’re going to miss them more than the lead of the show. Toward the beginning of this second episode of teh final season, we had the majority of the main teen cast together in a conversation, and I realized I would be missing them. And then, Victor’s parents came into play, and I realized I’d be missing their evolution as well. It’s kind of why I’m terrified of starting Season 5 of Grown-ish. I think they messed that up by dumping the ensemble, and I don’t want any bad memories of that show entering my mind. Sometimes, the ensemble really is worth talking about.
Episode Grade: A
4) Physical (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
My favorite episode of the series yet. Season 2, Episode 3. Mark this on the record books. I’ve been calmly following this, but Episode 3, which revolved mostly around a funeral, gave Rose Byrne life. It also gave her supporting cast, which hasn’t really been that strong, the most interesting moments. Wendi Malick was terrific. This was a great episode, and if Byrne wants to sneak into the Emmy race next year, I’d use this one.
Episode Grade: A
5) Grace and Frankie (Netflix)
English Audio Description? Yes
As you might have noticed, all my half hour comedies walked away with top grades. They all deserved it this day. I’m very slowly making it through the final season of Grace and Frankie, and this was the proposal episode, where Coyote finally pops the question. Nick hanging around makes me think that he and Grace will reconcile, because there’s no reason for him to still be on the show. And I correctly predicted, in obvious sitcom fashion, you don’t put your foreskin in a ring box in the same episode someone needs a ring box. Classic sitcom mix up humor ensued.
Episode Grade: A
6) The Essex Serpent (Apple Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
So, that limited series I talked about? No. It didn’t win. The serpent is just a whale. This series ended on one of the dullest notes it possibly could have, though the episode itself was fine. it’s just, when you get to the final moments, you’re just like… that’s it? We made a limited series about this? Great acting, but we are clearly making too many limited series.
Episode Grade: B, Series Grade: B
7) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
in Memento morí, the first episode of this show I watched since Nichelle Nichols death, it was very very weird to be watching someone else be doing Uhura. I know, this was already shot, and I’m watching it way late and there’s no way to pay tribute or anything, but thinking about that legacy, and then seeing someone else fresh in that role had a very new meaning. The episode was fine. My mind was just a little elsewhere this week. Rest In Peace.
