The Too Much TV Roundup- October 13th

Still keeping up with reverse format, and since I basically liked everything I watched yesterday, this one was a really hard list to put together.

8) The Connors (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Well, audio description was back. Ultimately, this ended up drawing the short straw for three reasons. First, the somewhat unmomentus return of Louise (Katey Sagal), the return of Mary as a character even though DJ was let go earlier this year, meaning she no longer has a father, but they’ll make a joke about how little they’ve seen her. The better question is, why did you fire her dad from the show when he’s an actual original Connor? Third, we got introduced to a new character only to see that they apparently are leaving after just one episode. I love The Connors, but this was not the day to play around with the structure.

Episode Grade: B+

7) This Fool (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I actually thought this new hulu comedy no one seems to be talking about was rather charming. A straight laced man living in the hood ends up working to rehabilitate ex-gang members, and works with his own cousin when he gets out of jail. It was funnier than I expected from a show whose talent I am apparently entirely unfamiliar.

Episode Grade: A-

6) Abbott Elementary (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

While this show is brilliant, when I’m having to rank so tightly, it slid down so far for one specific reason. Sheryl Lee Ralph, recent Emmy winner, was given perhaps the first and only opportunity to slay some vocals, and while she tried really hard to hide that she’s a fantastic singer, the question is… why? Why not let your only cast member who is known for being able to sing her face off do one killer rendition of Happy Birthday, instead of trying to play that for laughs? An over the top performance could have still sparked a laugh, and showed her full potential.

Episode Grade: A-

5) Home Economics (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Apparently Tom’s book has a chapter out, and it’s all about his wedding. Which was apparently utterly insane. It was weird seeing a dumb version of Connor, because I thought his whole character was pushing against the stereotype that some jock like him couldn’t also be smart. But, apparently he used to be an idiot.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Never Have I Ever (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Now that Davie and Paxton are broken up, and we needed a time jump to show her evolution, and him now dating a new girl, this episode ended up with Davie possibly having a new love interest. Will it make Paxton jealous? Or, will she finally get that inner self esteem from someone instantly liking her for who she is.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The Good Doctor (ABC/Hulu)

Ensign Audio Description?: Yes

Does Lin blame Sean Murphy like some others do? Well, you’ll have to wait till the end of the episode to find out the real answer to that question. This episode was mostly about whether or not to kill a pig to save a man, introducing two new characters, and having Lin learn to do surgery while handicapped. All of it worked.

Episode Grade: A

2) New Amsterdam (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

NBC’s medical drama might not be ending on a happy note, as Max gives an order to his staff for them to have a self care day, which has many of them finally getting their own personal medical care taken care of. With that in mind, we then see the potential reason Max had for everyone else seeing a doctor, and his frank conversation with Wilder this episode. This show does not always have happy endings. Will it go for a series finale gut punch?

Episode Grade: A

1) She Hulk (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

There will likely be a lot of debate about whether or not this finale worked, but no one will give it enough credit for doing exactly what this show has been doing all season, something very different from every other Marvel offering, both on TV and in Film. She Hulk really did swing for the fences, and I really enjoyed the risks it took. i don’t know where the QR code takes us, but I hope it was to an announcement that there will be a second season. it’s probably a Wakanda Forever trailer, but one can hope.

Episode Grade: A, Season 1 Grade: A

  1. The Home Economics throwback episode worked for me. However, I too was surprised they had younger Connor that clueless. She-Hulk absolutely took a big swing, throughout the series and definitely with the finale. It will be interesting to see what’s up next for those characters.

    1. I’m worried that they haven’t already picked up She Hulk for a second season. With their massive slate already, we’d be lucky to see a second season in 2024. Early 2025 feels more likely at this rate.

      1. Agreed. After this “run” of streaming series, and the glut of theatricals already scheduled far in advance (which they pushed back some dates on just last week), it will be very interesting to see what if any series get another season.
