Where I Watched it: AMC Plus
English Audio Description?: No
Since I have the AMC Plus subscription, I think it’s about time to put some reviews out there about how audio description could make their content better. Starting easy is this comedy, featuring a cast of comedy regulars. The plot is pretty simple, a couple splits up, divides their property, and they even have to decide who gets to keep going to their favorite bar, and who needs a new watering hole. To decide, they take place in a series of bar related games, ranging from darts to getting phone numbers, that will determine who wins the chance to stay. They each have friends who support them, and the staff at the bar is also present. And, this is set at Christmastime, with holiday music playing throughout, and even some carols are sung.
As far as my problems, I’ve got a big one. It’s a crazy one. but, the male lead in this is Ike Barinholtz. I don’t know who IMDB thinks it is, and I don’t care. I’ve heard Ike’s voice too many times. When i looked at IMDB and saw a different actor credited, shenanigans. Madness. Pure lies. If that’s not Ike, he’s a clone assassin Android sent here from another planet to kill Ike and assume his place in Hollywood. No one sounds that much like another actor just… because. Without doing an impression or something.
Aside from that weirdness, the film would probably be better if I understood what was happening in the montages. Like, during the scenes where the competition takes place, there has to be something going on. I just don’t know what that is. Why? Because there isn’t audio description. if it isn’t directly stated in dialogue, I was lost. This seems like a rather easy and simple plot, performed in a rather predictably charming way. it’s a dark horse Christmas movie too, meaning for those adults who like their Christmas films a bit more grown up, Bar Fight could fit that mold. But without audio description? It’s just a good not great film.
I think this score reflects my disappointment, just like I was when Weird didn’t have audio description. years from now, if I watched Bar Fight with audio description, I think I’d have a lot more fun the second time around.
Final Grade: B-
