The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/26/23

Yesterday, the first in a trio of finales hit the TV world as Maisel fans said goodbye to their favorite program. Coming up, in less than a week, are the series finales of Succession and Ted Lasso. It’s a sad week.

11) The Adventures of The Gummi Bears (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Despite my love of this show when I was a kid, this third episode did absolutely nothing for me.Part 1 involved a surprisingly friendly dragon, and part 2 involved… well… I don’t know because it was hard to follow without audio description. But one of the bears really wanted the other Gummi’s to listen to them. Again, this did nothing for my nostalgia monster.

Episode Grade: C-

10) Clarissa Explains it All (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Also crushing my soul to a lesser extent ws this rather unfunny half hour about Clarissa really trying to watch TV in an episode where she also claimed nothing good was on tV. It’s really odd for the third episode of the show to complain about TV watching, but props to the show for mentioning Nielsen as I’m sure most kids had no idea what that was.

Episode Grade: C+

9) Designing Women ( Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Not a great day for reruns. An underwhelming episode where we learn that Payne is dating an older woman, and while his mom thinks he has no clue, he totally does. It’s not like this episode has any resolution. It’s basically “Yeah, I know she’s 41, but we’re gonna keep having fun… if you know what I mean. Thanks Mom.”

Episode Grade: C+

8) Rabbit Hole (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

This probably should have been a limited series. Kyle is some kind of super agent badass for no apparent reason, and we get to relive how everyone died a few episodes back. Mainly because of Kyle. I’m losing interest as this show seems stuck in the weeds. It had a huge and killer start, but unconvering the mystery has been so tedious.

Episode Grade: B-

7) Waco: The Aftermath (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Limited Series (I assume)

I thought this would be a lot more focused on the court cases following the event, but unfortunately we have no audio description, and a ton of time jumps because it just HAS to show us Waco, even though this is not the first, or even second, show to do that. I stopped watching love and Death because it felt like a remake of Candy, and if this starts feeling like a remake of the show Taylor Kitsch made a few years back… this already lacks audio description, so I’m looking for a reason to exit.

Episode Grade: B-

7) Extrapolations (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Instead of focusing on climate change, we will apparently soon live in a future where we store our memories. I saw a film a little like this, probably multiple films, but Needle in A Time Stack came to mind, and I became less impressed with the episode.

Episode Grade: B-

5) Blindspotting (Starz)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not Yet Renwed

This Season 2 premiere was Sean’s birthday, and aside from that going very not according to plan, we also had a scene between the terrific Jasmine Cephas johnes and Helen Hunt where they discussed upcoming weekend visitations. I think the mother asking for an opportunity to go and see her son on one of the trips wasn’t a huge stretch, but you would think she just asked for a mountain to be moved. Other than that overreaction, the episode was great, and Blindspooting is one of the best reasons to have a Starz subscription, even if they have no idea what audio description is.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Game Of Thrones (HBO)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

I remember the season 3 opener almost too well. Tyrion still being treated like shit by his father, the arrival of new characters, and the introduction of the unsullied.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The Traitors: Australia (Peacock)

English audio Description?: no

Status: unknown

Claire became a target yet again for her initial reaction after the traitors were chosen. man, Aussies don’t let shit go. Some of these people I’d be voting off just because they are obnoxious.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Sweet Tooth (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

We learn about where the adults are, and how Dog got into the kibble. I really hope this season doesn’t end with the massacre of child hybrids. The people keeping them hostage… fine. They can go. But I’m really warming up to this cage full of kids. But real talk. Where are they pooping?

Episode Grade: A

1) Succession (HBO/MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

Everyone flies out to Mattisen at his request. Not that these kids are the most endearing characters, but Mattisen is a loser. Just him alone sharing that story with Shiv, about the blood, was a red flag. However, as we saw at the end, with the list of who would be getting the axe, Tom seems safe, and Shiv is even open to dinner. So, things are looking up for Tom. Greg, however, was at the top of the list. I do think firing Frank, the one guy who seems to actually have a grasp on what’s going on, might be a misstep. It would have been much more fun to see the division between Frank and the other guy if Mattisen was keeping only one of them. Kieran Culkin also had a great scene where he just tore into Mattisen. Good for Roman.

Episode Grade: A
