The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/10/23

The WGA is attempting to sit down and begin talks again, and we shall see how that progresses. I think the Television Producers would prefer to have writers back first, working on scripts for the actors to actually shoot once they resolve the SAG strike..

12) The Horror Of Delores Roach (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I keep hoping I’ll like this story more. I want Justina Machado to have a hit new series, I’m just not sure this is it. It’s very much her telling her own version of the story, but it feels clunky. will I do a fourth episode? I don’t know.

Episode Grade: C

11) American Born Chinese (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Well, as I reach the final episode of this series, I think it asks more questions than it answers, and while I appreciate what it does for diversity, it always felt like a combination of ideas for different shows thrown together that just never really worked. I’d be surprised, with as stingy as Disney Plus is with renewals, that this gets a second season. But, they left a cliffhanger just in case.

Episode Grade: B-, Season 1 Grade: B-

10) My Adventures With Superman (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

This occasionally funny show seems like an odd fit for the adult swim block, but I’m glad MAX is running it also with audio description. Superman isn’t my favorite hero, and I’m not sure this show has anything new to say about the hero right now.

Episode Grade: B-

9) Justified (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Now airing

This show really is hard to follow because truly someone gets shot or shot at every episode, often without any verbal acknowledgement. So, that being said, I think this is a solid show, but I keep having to lower the grade and its ranking because I can’t follow it sometimes at all. This episode confused me a lot. I didn’t realize Dickey was still alive, but that becomes part of this jail break that Raylon is looking into.

Episode Grade: B

8) Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

This is a series rewatch for me, so this episode was one I remembered. “Prophecy Girl” is a big moment in the series, as the Scoobies have to try and figure out how to keep a prophecy that has Buffy dying at the hands of The Master from happening. Of course, she does briefly die, which will soon introduce Kendra, the other Vampire Slayer. A trope that is used later to bring Faith in. in every generation there is a Slayer? Well, in the Flatliners universe, there could be lots of Slayers. Just wake them all up. But, this has too much action in it, and lacks audio description. If I hadn’t seen the show before, I would have been totally lost.

Episode Grade: B

7) Boy Meets World (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

This felt a little too A Very Special episode, when Eric learns a lesson about taking a girl upstairs. but, to his parents bedroom? Why not his own? So weird. This episode doesn’t have audio description, but a nice joke about Shawn and his hair being attractive to girls helps to save this, but mostly some banter between the parents. Cory’s parents have a conversation that genuinely made them feel like a couple, and I enjoyed it.

Episode Grade: B+

6) All In The Family ( FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I would love to know more about this thing that Gloria brought home that her dad is so offended by, but the real winner of this was Jean Stapleton, who took her clueless Edith to new levels as she just kept recounting this story of one perfect night in her life that she owed to Henry Mancini, and today was his birthday, which she just kept reminding everyone.

Episode Grade: B+

5) The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I still feel like this show is headed right where I think it is headed. I’m not a huge fan of predictability, and I need to be shown another possibility pretty fast.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

The first appearance of Wallace Shawn, who goes on to recur for a while, and is such a great addition to the show. Personally, I would have made him a regular, but i think i know where his character heads.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Community (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: The movie Is Coming

Hilarious episode. From Pierce trying to hypnotize Britta, to Abed making short films about the study group, and Annie and Jeff doing a debate tournament and Jeff actually getting beat by someone at something he really used to do for a living. Classic Community.

Episode Grade: A

2) Glamorous (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I really really hope that Netflix sticks with this. I’m loving this show, and these characters. It’s funny that even a minor character like Dismal Failure seems to work immediately into this perfect chemistry the cast has. Maybe I’m alone on this, but I think the showrunners here have done a bang up job making sure this casting works. And to see them realize their Pride campaign isn’t working, and to push it further, good for them.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Great (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: We Need One More Season

Come on, Hulu. Renew this for a final season. We need to see where these characters land, at least. There is too much up in the air, and if you’re going to kill off Peter, then I want a full season of what Katherine can do with her new awakening. The ensemble really stepped up in Season 3, and even though Maxim is headed off to a Military School, I hope he’d be back for a fourth season. That kid is hilarious.

Episode Grade: A, Season 3 Grade: A-
