The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/15/23

I saw a glimmer of TV news that reminded me that ABC’s limbo shows are all still in limbo. Decisions have not been made yet firmly on a second season of The Rookie Feds, a fourth season of Home Economics, or a first season of the Good Doctor spinoff The Good Lawyer. Technically, the only one whose cast is still held is The Rookie Feds, however, SAG has in their strike rules that when a strike occurs, deals like this that are in place essentially will give an extension of how many days were left at the time of the strike. So, ABC will still have plenty of time to consider these three shows. The longer the strike, the less likely they come back. My guess is Home Economics is the easiest to shoot, and the Good Lawyer might be hardest as it likely would need to fill out an ensemble, and assemble a writers room.

7) Desperate Housewives (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

A show that needs audio description, especially if it is going to expand its cast. Some guy has a medical emergency and something happens at the beginning, someone gets hit by a car, someone takes an incriminating photo and there’s a scuffle, someone moves all her kids crap outside, just so many things i would have preferred audio description on.

Episode Grade: C+

6) Cheers (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Diane continues to be one of the worst written female leads in history as she goes to another insane length to get Sam’s attention. Norm has a nice moment in this episode, otherwise… if I were Shelly Long, I’d be Katherine Heigling my way out of the show.

5) Hoff The Récord (BritBox)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

My weekly reminder that I have a BritBox subscription (for now) and they don’t offer audio description. Honestly, if they offered more movies, I’d be more interested, even obscure British films, but that selection is low. This comedy is kinda funny, with The hoff being up for anything, including hanging out with a warlord who is obsessed with him. This was made in 2015, which makes me a title less impressed by The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent.

4) I Am A Virgo (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I kind of agree with jones, in that what the others are trying to do isn’t the best course of action. However, I liked this episode a little less because it centered mostly on the deranged Hero. He’s not even Homelander levels of interesting. I learned more about him, and I kinda wish I hadn’t. He seems like a child. I’ve been paying more attention to the work Roundabout has been doing in terms of audio description, but with this show, it’s heavily stylized, and I’m also not always aware of what I’m missing. I will say that the way the hero moves his building confused me. Does the whole thing pop in out of the ground, or does he just have a special platform that rises him up and down? It felt like both at some points.

Episode Grade: B+

3) The Witcher (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

My catch up is now into season 2, where Garolt believes Yennifer is dead, and he takes Siri to an old friend’s place, where something is lurking. Considering the creature we eventually discover, I thought all of their movements were incredibly well done, and the creature effects described well. The one scene was when the creature was feeding on the guy, it was kinda vague. The initial description described something that seemed bloodier than what happpens when the guy wakes up after like nothing happened.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Full Circle (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited Series

This Steven Soderbergh directed Limited is so bizarre, and it still hasn’t answered all the questions. Like, if that was really his casino limit, why did it happen to be the first numbers of Pi? What a weird coincidence. And, now we get a better idea of who Nicky is.I’m intrigued. And, Jim Gaffigan in a dramatic role? Wow.

1) Platonic (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I can see how they might want to only do one season, but I just loved these two characters together so much that I’d love to see the team challenged to do a second season. They did mention what the next steps in their lives looked like, and we could explore that. Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne were just so damn good in this show.
