The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/31/23

Following up on my earlier post about The Great, there are rumors that HBo is looking at picking up the show, as some major stars were already rumored to be joining the Season 4 cast, and the show was apparently in pre-production. Little birds were telling me Jonathan Groff and Laura Linney would have appeared in Season 4. Will HBO save The Great? We will have to wait and see.

#11) 911 (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Moving To ABC

i was halfway into season 3 before I got this Eddie centric episode, which not only included combat sequences that were hard to follow (as the character is a veteran), but was the first time I believe I heard Christopher has cerebal palsy. Wow. Eddie was introduced at the top of Season 2, with his son being introduced shortly after, and it took me a season and a half for that information. Worst thing is, Season 2 was audio described. Did I miss something? Either way, between the combat sequences and the rescue Eddie performs, and the constant flashing through time, this episode was a pain in the ass to try and follow without audio description.

10) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I gotta say, I know we play the “Rose is so stupid” card a lot on the show, but this episode really took the cake and jumped the shark with it. While Rose is trying to become a TV Reporter (for reasons unknown other than they ran out of ideas), she is covering a dog pageant when an armed robbery occurs. She seems to take a beat and tells her cameraman to keep filming, as she’ll do what any good reporter does. So, the gag is, instead of filming the robbery and having first hand footage from inside, she kept talking about the damn dog show. Now, I’m up for just about anything with these girls, but that’s a leap too far for me.

9) All In The Family (FreeVee)

Archie is worried that this Catholic lady is trying to convert Edith. It’s just one more way to show Archie approaching a topic and not handling it well.

8) Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The Rangers are starting to feel like they have a formula now, with this episode starting off revealing Dale to be a big fan of a TV super dog. Dale thinks the dog really is a hero that can do all those things. Luckily for him, he’ll get a chance to meet his hero when FatCat kidnaps him. But, Dale is disappointed to find out that Chip is right, and the dog isn’t super. But, the dog is a nice dog at least. Yes, i just explained the plot of a cartoon to you.

Almost at the end of Season 3. Boyd has recruited some people to run for office is Harlan County that would really bring corruption to politics. Meanwhile, Neal McDonagh swung by to threaten Raylon that he’s going to shoot him someday.Delusions of grandeur. For real. I’m able to rate this higher than I have been, because there weren’t really any big shootouts, and the political stuff with Boyd was something I could follow.

I’m supposed to believe that someone with Diaz’s past could be slipped date rape drugs? You would think she would know better. But, even though I’m not a fan of that trajectory for her, or her teams willingness to reveal themselves to resuce her, even though it could have been a trap, the whole thing with Jo’s daughter is so unexpected for the 4th episode of this series.

5) This Fool (hulu)

The second half of the bank robbery episode. It ends about how you would expect it to end.

4) Swagger (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Swagger is just starting to get its groove back. Finally moving away from the shitty storyline that bogged down the first half of the season, we can now get back into watching these kids head for the NBA. though, this episode comes very much at the “but what about the others?”, as Coach is called out for constantly pushing the Jace Carson train over the other boys who should all have bright futures. So, this episode makes Jace a big of a diva when he finds out his 3 point percentage is 20% and then gives expanded time to the rest of the team, primarily Nick and CJ. nick gets some backstory, and CJ gets a trip to see his dying grandfather he’s never met, which gives him the courage to come out to his Dad, and then the team.

3) Veep (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

A robust episode that leads to Selina feeling the weight of a decision that led to the loss of a soldier’s leg. A rare dramatic beat for the series, but it worked its way in so well. It was in the middle of everyone having fun and laughing, and then Selina finds out this news, and you can tell how immediately she is rocked by it.

I am such a stickler in one specific area. And, I’ve been here before. I remember dissecting an episode of The Goldbergs spinoff Schooled, which took a moment to reference some movies that couldn’t all be where they were supposed to be based on the shows description. here, our leads get to walk into a movie theatre, which through the audio description we are told has posters for both A Knights Tale and Punch Drunk Love. A Knights Tale was released in May 2001, with Punch Drunk love releasing in October 2003. Those posters would not share the same space. To help decide which is more correct, there is also a standee referenced for the Dana Carvey film The Master of Disguise. Then, all shit is thrown out the window when John finds a theatre, and the print left in the booth is for BlankMan which is a 1994 film. What on earth. And apparently John knows how to thread a projector, because they are going to watch BlankMan. What an unusual skill set to have. And, while I’m in this rabbit hole, if he’s trying to avoid being caught by not running the sound for BlankMan, the projector is pretty freaking loud, and a running projector would be more than enough to give them away. Details people. Otherwise, I quite enjoyed the episode.
