The Too Much TV Roundup- 09/06/23

Warner TV suspended it’s TV deals with a lot of the major showrunners they had deals with. This strike is just one big power play for the studios. I’m surprised they aren’t just going around cancelling a ton of shows.

11) Family Matters (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Continuing his reign of terror, Urkel is given the right to direct a video for the family he’s not a part of. This is still season 1, and a character who wasn’t even in the first couple episodes has already taken over the series.

Episode Grade: C+

10) Designing Women (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

It took the ladies only until the beginning of Season 2 before being asked to design a funeral.

Episode Grade: C+

9) Doug (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

i remember back in the day thinking this episode didn’t make any sense, but it’s the one where Skeeter tells Doug that he’s moving. With ZERO context, Doug spends the whole period moping around about the great time he and his best friend have had over the last 13 episodes, only to find out that Skeeter is moving into the basement. He’s not moving away.

Episode Grade: C+

8) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revival Now Airing

I’m still in Season 2. Two old people must hook up to save the world from a robopocalypse. Basically. I’d still love for this show and its numerous sight gags to have audio description.

Episode Grade: B-

7) Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The titular duo get stuck in a “space plane”, and somehow later in a spacesuit floating around space, which leads Gadget to devise a plan to rescue them, with Monterey Jack using 20 dynamite sticks. My childhood was weird, y’all.

Episode Grade: B

6) Ahsoka (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Speaking of flying around in space, I blame the absurdity either on the writers or on the description. Maybe the writers made it cool, and something got lost in translation, but I thought it was kind of dumb.

Episode Grade: B

5) Hoff The Récord (BritBox)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

The Hoff checks into rehab to try and repair his image, and ends up taking advice from a mental patient convincingly pulling off a guru routine.

Episode Grade: B+

4) Ugly Betty (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

It might surprise you to know I never watched this show. I’m aware of what America Ferrara looked like, but it never seemed like something I’d enjoy. I was wrong. Aside from the lack of audio description, this was a solid start to the series.

Episode Grade: B+

3) The Bear (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Everything is coming together, and they just need to pass one last inspection. Ritchie returns a changed man, and now someone i can tolerate. Jermey Alyn White is now participating in the show again. We are headed toward a real solid finale.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Hijack (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I won’t spoil this, in case you haven’t finished Hijack yet, but I’m assuming episode 7 was the final. It felt final of the season, and I can’t even imagine where they could go after this. I’m not even sure I want to know. That was the perfect ending, and anything more than this is unnecessary. I wouldn’t renew this unless it became an anthology series with a new cast.

Episode Grade: A

1) The Righteous Gemstones (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

I’m glad I know this is coming back, because that really felt like a series finale. Those locusts? Out of nowhere. Wow. And Baby Billy’s show wasn’t that bad. A show that gets better with age, and the strike hopefully will get this show to some Emmy love.Episode Grade: A+
