The Small Screen Diaries: 09/18/2025

TV Shows Watched: gen V: S2E2 (Amazon) with audio description, Black Rabbit: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, Next Gen Chef: S1E1 (Netflix) with audio description, The girlfriend: S1E3 (Amazon) with audio description, red Fish Blue Fish: S1E4 (Netflix) with audio description, The paper: S1E4 (Peacock) with audio description, and The morning Show: S4E1 (Apple Plus) with audio description

Gen V- The very special guest this episode is Deep, who makes a brief appearance at a frat hazing ceremony. Otherwise, our trio of heroes decide after all that school is the safest place, so they return to take classes on anti-woke social media influencing, and a combat training sequence that is like if Professor X put the X-Men in the Danger Room without explaining the task. And, while I mentioned if you watch the first episode, you’ll get a revealing look at the entire season ahead, they do resolve the Kate stuff almost immediately. So, while it was kind of spoiled, it also basically frontloads episode two. some really nice audio description, especially during the combat sequence.

Black Rabbit- this super hyped new limited series has Jason Bateman and Jude law as dysfunctional and estranged brothers at different points in time. At the beginning, we start in the Black Rabbit (the name of the restaurant owned by Law), and then flashback to a month prior so we can catch up with his ne’er do well brother (Bateman) and see how he works his way back in. It is promising, but it also seems really predictable right now. If I turn out to be right, then the series isn’t nearly as smart or clever as it thinks. I shouldn’t be able to predict the end from the beginning, and sometimes I’m right, and sometimes I’m wrong. I prefer to be wrong.

Next Gen Chef-Netflix has decided finally with the success of Top Chef and Masterchef, that they should replicate that. So if you like either of those shows, this is exactly that. to be fair, NBC just did the exact same thing with yes Chef. Apparently we love watching people cook. I got more audio description than I thought I would, so that’s something.

The Girlfriend- well, after meandering a bit, this mediocre show took a giant leap forward and found an interesting path ton take. No spoilers, but this seems to be the new thing for Amazon shows, which start out predictable and dull, only to have a mid season twist. the better Sister just did the same thing, not really becoming interesting until the last half of the season. Now, I’m intrigued. I’m not loving the audio description though. The description is OK, but I think this is the same narrator who just did Hostage, and I’m connecting those dots. it’s like some weird AD PTSD. I typically have it with two other narrators who work for the worst companies, and produced the worst audio description.

Red Fish Blue Fish- only five episodes, and the 4th one is a Christmas episode. Delightful audio description, wonderful narration, and your kids aged 3-7 should enjoy this.

The Paper- The team goes to a high school and becomes jealous of the students at the local paper who seem to have more experience than they do. Hilarity ensues. Also, I got to hear a really weird rendition of Apex Predator from Mean Girls the Musical. The narration here by Dave Wallace is great. Sometimes there are clearly some visual elements missing from the written narration, but what Wallace is actually given to work with, he makes a mountain out of a molehill.

The Morning Show- We changed narrators here. I’m not crazy about the change. It feels flatter than I’d like, but I’m also resistant to change. So, I’m trying to be more open for a few episodes. the written description is solid, and this is a weird return for The Morning Show which seems to be unable to figure out if its characters can be followed outside of the confines of this one program, so everyone always seemingly survives whatever scandal they were a part of, as long as the series continues to want them around. here, Alex still isn’t happy, despite having survived all her scandals, and keeps pulling at a thread. Eventually, Bradley comes back, despite her thing from last season, and the episode ends with the possibility of Corey making a comeback since they don’t know what else to do with billy crudup. I love the Morning Show, but they need to explore how these characters can work without constantly removing repercussions for misdeeds.

Say Something!
