TV Shows Watched: House Of The Dragon: S3E7 (HBO MAX) with audio description, Widows Bay: S1E9 (Apple) with audio description, Detective Hole: S1E? (Netflix) with audio description, Robin Hood: S1E5 (MGM Plus) with audio description, St Dennis Medical: S2E11 (Peacock) with audio description, Last Week Tonight: Current (HBO MAX) no audio description yet, and American Classic: S1E5 (MGM Plus) with audio description
House Of The Dragon- I got cheated out of my Bring The Usurper To Me! But, the episode still featured an epic dragon battle, the most oedipal thing on HBO ever, and something presumed dead rises. There’s also a surprising New romantic entanglement, and Helena dreams that winter is coming. Point 360’s audio description is taking all the praise right now, but it only has one more episode left. Which show will rise to the top of the heap after next week? Fantastic AD, and I love the show.
Widows Bay- Some really nice description, though I was a tad unclear as to what actually got sucked into the twister, but the genealogy sequence was fun. This episode is clearly why Dale Dickey got that Emmy nomination.
Detective Hole- Thought this would be the finale, it isn’t, and there’s another episode. Stop dragging this out. We know who the bad guy is, we already went through the serial killer plot, just finish it. Also, synthetic voice. Decent writing, but synthetic voice.
Robin Hood- I want this to be better, and this episode actually picked up steam at the end as Robin has to free Ralph and their siblings from a hanging, which was one of the more interesting bits of the series thus far. The AD here is solid. The action was well captured.
St Dennis Medical- Struggles with typical sitcom structure for its description, but I love this show. Joyce finds out she has an HR department.Bruce deserved an Emmy nomination. This series deserves Emmy love along with Ghosts. Emmy voters are sleeping on network sitcoms while pretending Abbott Elementary is the only quality network comedy. It isn’t.
Last Week Tonight- I’m shook. Everyone should watch his main feature. Holy shit the big brother thing is real. I’m afraid to use my phone now. Like, they are using fake cell towers that automatically receive your signal, so they can record the data, before pushing it to a real cell tower for your calls. I used the website, and I found out in my area, everything in his hellscape nightmare is being used where I live. If you are not a John Oliver fan, do your own research then, because he’s been working on this for a while. He even admits, his team started doing records requests three years ago, and these programs have been in hiding in plain sight for some time, but they’re really trying to hide it. It’s the most investigative journalism they’ve done probably ever.
American Classic- Richard has his first play rehearsal, while his brother has a crippling gambling addiction. The AD here is quite lovely for a comedy series. It could be more, but it ain’t bad.
Best AD: Dragon. Easy.
Worst AD?- I gotta push back on synthetic voice with Detective Hole. Nothing was just outright terrible, and Last Week Tonight does add audio description a few days later, I’m just impatient. They tape on Saturday, it airs on Sunday, and I’ve heard audio description within the week following. I don’t know if it is a consistent day each week, but before next Sunday, this will have AD. Detective Hole, on the other hand will always be synthetic, and if we’re being honest, obviously so. We’re getting better voices trying to fabricate emotion, and this is obviously not human.
