The Small Screen Diaries: 08/19/26

TV Shows Watched: Ted Lasso: S4E3 (Apple) with audio description, Nemesis: S1E8 (Netflix) with audio description, Sheriff Country: S1E19 (Paramount Plus) with audio description, The Comeback: S2E4 (HBO MAX) with audio description, St Dennis Medical: S2E13 (Peacock) with audio description, and Breaking Bad: S4E9 (Netflix) with audio description

Ted Lasso- I enjoyed this episode with open tryouts. Plus, Ted got to hang with Henry for a smidge, the whole reason he left to begin with. Ted Lasso is slowly finding its feet. Will it ever be as good as it once was? Probably not, though I like this reboot of Ted Lasso far more than the final season of The Bear, or even last season of Abbott Elementary. So far anyway. It’s early. The audio description misses the boat sometimes. Like when Keeley gets that small package at the end that she’s been chasing around town, small is subjective. If the joke was that it was cartoonishly small, like a ring box, then that joke was lost.

Nemesis- This show is awesome. The AD is flaccid. Sometimes the action is written well, but I keep repeating myself, Vito is the wrong voice for this. At least I didn’t have to hear him struggle to pronounce Malik multiple times. Malik is present, though not nearly as much as the previous episode. I do plan to review, and Nemesis has been picked up for a second season.Dream cast? Thomas Reid. Now that the show is coming back, toss this over to an AD house that hires Reid, and let him show the world what was missing by interpreting the second season of nemesis.

Sheriff Country- The whole investigation into Mickey is functionally stupid, and I’m glad she’s finally ready to kick her DEA fuckboy to the curb. He is clearly bad for your career, family, and town. The AD was solid again here, though I miss having Wes as a constant premise, something they have to figure out how to fix in Season 2.

The Comeback- This bizarre thing they’re shooting now has to be done at her home. I hate this AD track as well. I’m hoping Season 3 will be better, and that Seasons 1 and 2 were done as part of back cataloging. It gets about 1 out of every 5 or 6 jokes. You definitely feel it when it doesn’t point out something it needs to.

St Dennis Medical- Is Bruce getting poached? That’s the main story for this episode. Anything with Josh Lawson at the center. I actually voted to nominate him in supporting actor in one of the things I vote for. His work is classic, and underrecognized, as is David Alan Grier. The AD here is OK, given the format, and better than The Comeback.

Breaking Bad- They are releasing the Season 4 finale theatrically in a special event in a few weeks, and I’m almost there anyway. Things are coming to a boiling point, and you can tell bodies will be hitting the floor. DVW and Diane Newman did lovely work here.

Best: Breaking Bad- Especially that brawl between Jesse and Walt, or even how Skylar enters the interrogation sequence with full cleavage, highlighting her attempt to pass as a pretty idiot.

Worst: This was a struggle, but I really hate The Comeback. I actually recommended Season 1 to someone as an example of a show I’m 100% positive would have better audio description if a different team took a swing at it. Even with the format, it still falls far below expectations.
