I technically watched three movies today, though one wasn’t feature length. And 8 episodes. So there ya go.
8) The Watchful eye (Freeform/Hulu)
English Audio Description?: No
Really, this show was borderline unwatchable without audio description. It opens up in the pilot and for the first few minutes, something is happening, but there is no audio description, and no one is talking. That’s not the only time that tactic is used in this show. Sadly, I got the hint that if this did have audio description I would watch it. So, if you’re one of my sighted readers, I’ll let you go off and figure this one out for yourself, but for us blind folk, sadly this show is basically…
Final Grade: unwatchable
7) 1923 (Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
This show is moving at a snails pace, which would be fine if it was a normal series looking at a multi-season run. instead, this is a two season, 16 episode show, and this was episode 6. Molasses. I appreciate the acting, and it would take quite a bit for me to walk away from a Yellowstone prequel with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, but damn. It certainly is trying. oddly enough, the Native American parts of this show are far more interesting. That cast is on fire. The Duttons? I want to send them some Red Bull in a Time Machine.
Episode Grade: C+
6) The Daily Show (Comedy)
English Audio Description?: No
While I enjoyed part of Sarah Silverman’s turn on The Daily Show, there’s something about her presentation that really felt censored. If I’m lucky enough in my life to get a program like this hosted by Sarah Silverman, I would want her unfiltered, which means she needs at least the latitude John Oliver has. She definitely had some of her signature humor here, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that she wanted to go further. I think DL Hughley is still my least favorite, then Sarah. Right now, I’m hoping they pick Chelsea Handler, though I think Hasan Minaj, playing on home court here, and having the experience of doing Patriot Act, is about to make the strongest case of who should get the spot.
Episode Grade: B-
5) Ghosts (CBS/Paramount Plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
After last week’s brilliant episode, this one was just OK. Focusing mainly on Valentine’s Day and how that dynamic affects our real life living folk as well as the ghosts, and I think it worked well enough, but it won’t be my favorite episode of Ghosts moving forward.
Episode Grade: B+
4) 911 Lone Star (FOX/Hulu)
English Audio Description?: No
I’m trying to limit how many shows without audio description I allow myself to get hooked on, because it’s frustrating when an episode like this rolls around. Carlos was in danger the whole episode, after he found a serial killer that is being enabled by his mother. There were so many scenes without dialogue, where visual clues seemed necessary, and I didn’t get those clues. The other plot, where Captain Strand is trying to infiltrate a group of domestic terrorists is still playing out about as expected.
Episode Grade: A-
3) Truth Be Told (Apple plus)
English Audio Description?: Yes
Favorite scene from episode 2: When Gabrielle Union explains to someone that a child cannot be a prostitute because the child is too young to consent. This season is really doing solid work of making its point, and I’m sad to see this go.
Episode Grade: A-
2) The Traitors (Peacock)
English Audio Description?: Yes
I’m obsessed. I love trying to predict who will be killed, and who will be sent home. My guess is that a traitor will survive. There are no eyes on Cody, so unless he fucks this up, he should be safe. However, Shri has that “with great power comes great responsibility” knowledge. She can get rid of Kate, by murdering someone from the list, but when she does that, and Kate is revealed as a faithful, it’ll be pretty obvious what happened.
Episode Grade: A
1) South Park (HBo MAX!)
English Audio Description?: no
Hey! HBO MAX airs the new episodes! Why do I have cable? The answer is…. HAVEN’T YOU HEARD OF PRIVACY? Brilliant.
Episode Grade: A+
