The Too Much TV Roundup- 05/04/23

I celebrated Star Wars Day by not watching any Star Wars. Listen. i watched and reviewed all the titles last year before obi Wan dropped. I’m good to go for this year. Also, production on some shows continue to shut down due to the writers strike. The most recent shows affected are hacks, American Horror Story, and billions.

12) The power (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not yet Renewed

Amazon’s drama, which I love the concept, but not the execution, continues to be kind of a mess. It’s characters are spread out. Generally, the lead is the big name, though neither Toni Collette or john Leguizamo feel like the lead. The girl with the voice inside her head, who tries to be helpful this episode, feels like the lead. Perhaps, it’s because the voice feels like a narrator of sorts for the series. I want this show to be good. I really do. I just think its very mediocre.

Episode Grade: C+

11) The Night Agent (netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed For Season 2

This smash hit has some really interesting moments, and sprinkles of possibilities within the plot. However, I think at the end of the last episode, with that focus on someone who can’t be trusted, I already know who it is, and nothing changed my mind. I don’t want to spoil that here, but as one may assume in the second episode, all is not how it seems. Still, that being said, this show is dumb. There’s a massive chase sequence inside a hotel. Does no one else stay or work here? Apparently the only employee works at a coat check. If power was cut to the building, wouldn’t other people notice? Why didn’t they just hide in another room? I’m sure there are more rooms, and those locks would have been disabled. Also, I don’t need to get to know the assassins. I feel like I barely know the leads, so spending time with the assassins while they have some form of sexual interaction was wasted. And this Hazel Eyes assassin who doesn’t have a name, why did she choose the boutique? She didn’t see them go in there, yet she’s clearing it methodically. How does she know they aren’t still running? makes no sense.

10) Cheers (Paramount Plus)

Status: Ended

Basically, Diane convinces Sam to donate something to a telethon to raise money, and even though he initially protests, because he doesn’t think anyone knows who he is, she still pushes him to donate. He ends up being right, as no one seems to want to buy his jersey. There were a couple of good jokes here.

Episode Grade: B-

9) Friends (HBo MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

i don’t give this audio description enough credit, but during the opening theme, it actually names the actor and the character they play. What a great use of this time. The episode, the one with jean Claude Van Damme, had Ross and Co visiting Marcel on the set, where monica reveals her crush on Van Damme, only to find out the Muscle has eyes for Rachel. joey tries to get himself cast in the movie. Chandler meets an old classmate who is not what she seems. That leaves Phoebe as the one without a real storyline, but she had some solid moments babysitting Monica and Rachel.

8) The Masked Singer (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: not on hulu

Status: Presumably Renewed

Current Predictions: California Roll has to be Pentatonix right? I think Medusa is Wynonna Judd. The crown they kept saying made them think she was Lorde could just mean she’s Country Music Royalty, and having just watched the documentary on her, that kind of sounds like her. She also just suffered a tragedy, and her big clue was ‘Mom”, to which she said “nothing is more important to me”. I didn’t know who UFO was, but I did get the Miss USA/miss America reference, but I can’t name any of them other than Vanessa Williams.

Episode Grade: B

7) Not Dead yet (ABC/hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

I know I was supposed to be all in on the potential relationship, but Lauren Ash once again stole the show. When her employee came up to her to talk about his dreams of TV journalism, and her response was to pull out her phone and say something like “Oh, hey fake phone call to get me out of this situation….”, I felt like it was handled so well because Ash has amazing comedic timing. She went unrecognized for her work on Superstore, and I’d love it if she could get an Emmy nomination this year. She’s overdue in general.

Episode Grade: B

6) 6) The Daily Show (Comedy)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Still Without A Permanent Host, Though Roy Wood Jr is looking good…

i feel bad for this weeks correspondent, as she only got the one show on Monday before the writers strike took effect. So unlike her counterparts, who had a full week to show what they had, she only gets one episode to prove she’s worthy. honestly? She still seems really green. We’ve seen several female comics host this season, and she’s the least polished of all of them. i think she’s hilarious, and I wish her a long career, but for hosting? I think it’s a not right now thing. How can you look at what she’s doing, and put that up against Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Handler, Leslie jones, or Wanda Sykes? you can’t.

5) American Auto (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: not Yet Renewed

When family paintings start coming down, the battle begins. but, there’s too much going on, from one of the gang being catfished by an AI technology, to Katherine designing an awful car.

4) 911 (FOX/hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Moving To ABC

This plane crash episode was a lot. I thought how they treated Athena at the end of the episode was bullshit, and pissed me off, and that’s basically the only reason we’re in 4th place. That rescue sequence between the Captain and the mother was some truly inspiring shit.

3) Shrinking (Apple plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Harrison Ford is the unsung hero of this show. He really navigated this episode well, landing lines like “what the fuck is a switch?” To his heart to heart with Sean where he gets him back on track, while also admitting how scared he is of telling his daughter he has Parkinson’s. Ford is Emmy eligible for two series this year, but if he’s being submitted in supporting for Shrinking, i think he can easily get the nomination.

Episode Grade: A

2) Schmigadoon (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

in the season’s penultimate episode, it was that “There’s Always A Twist” musical number that really sealed the deal for me. The whole episode was great, but giving two lesser characters the chance to shine in that foreshadowing musical number really worked for me.

1) Will Trent (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

now that’s how you close out a season. I wasn’t immediately a fan of this show, but somewhere around Episode 5 it really kicks in, and it was pretty full steam from there. This season finale was intense, and packed with plenty of twists and turns.
