Starring: Jordan Peele, Keegan Michael Key, Method Man, Tiffany Haddish, Will Forte, Nia Long, Jason Mitchell, Luis Guzman
Directed By: Peter Atencio
The first Key and Peele movie. I’ll chalk this up to being a warm up to something bigger. I’m glad I waited till DVD for this one, because it isn’t really worth 10 bucks. It reminded me a lot of films before it that were a lot funnier, like Malibu’s Most Wanted. Yes, I thought a Jamie Kennedy film was funnier than a Key and Peele movie.
The film is all about a really cute cat and different people who want him. Obviously, if you’ve seen the preview, you’ll know that Rell (Peele) wants him. But so does Cheddar (Method Man), the leader of a gang, as well as two mysterious hitmen, and another drug dealer (Guzman). But some shit has to go down in order for this to happen.
Key and Peele are funny enough, but the film is just a little too silly. I had a hard time following the film because I couldn’t take them seriously, and I was wondering how anyone in the film was taking them seriously. I feel like a real gang would have shot them immediately. Supporting performances… meh. I suppose Will Forte was funny, in a Will Forte type of way. I couldn’t help but think Jason Mitchell is being shafted after his terrific performance in Straight Outta Compton.
Keanu is OK. It has some funny moments, but overall it kinda falls flat. If you’re bored and see it on Netflix, maybe check it out? Or if you’re a hardcore Key and Peele fan. but I’m still hoping there’s something bigger coming from them.
