The Too Much TV Roundup- May 11th

I’m starting to enjoy this new format, as it gives me more of an opportunity to have collected thoughts on what I just watched the previous day. Time to reveal just how much television I actually watch.

1) Mr Mayor (NBC/Peacock/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Depending on the platform.

This is why I like the new format, because it gives me an opportunity to talk about a show I might not have otherwise singled out. But the 9th episode of this shows 2nd Season was hilarious. Spending so much time on jokes about how young people don’t know what mail is, to Jaden’s reactions the entire episode, from being called Iago, to interacting so much with a Minion that he starts to talk like one, and this made for a very entertaining 24 minutes. The most entertaining of my day. Hopefully this show will get a third season, but the way tings are looking, the axe is landing on too many shows I actually watch. (RIP The United States Of Al, one of only two sitcoms on CBS I actually watched).

Episode Grade: A

2) Woke (Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

Not gonna lie, but this was one of the funnier episodes of this show, which revolved mainly around two basic concepts: apartment hunting, and a parental visit. In true sitcom style, the former led to two of our lead characters having a sit down with a prospective black roommate, only to find out she had some very interesting ideas about the American black experience. And the latter revolved mostly around an infected foot, but also a father with his own ideas, that came from a very different generation.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Name That Tune (Fox/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: No?

I don’t really know if you need audio description if your sole purpose is to see if you yourself can name those tunes. It got really interesting in the second of the two games, and I thought that guy was actually gonna sweep it all, then he just turned out to be a wash. Dude had never heard Good Vibrations before. WTF.

Episode Grade: B+

4) 911 Lone Star (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Apparently, though I’ve never had the pleasure.

In what felt like just another run of the mill episode for this series, like another day at the office, it ended with a cliffhanger. This show is kind of notorious for leaving main characters in the lurch, and isn’t afraid to axe a recurring or even main character.

Episode Grade: B

5) Jeopardy (Syndication)

English Audio Description Available?: No

I’ll admit, after learning even more about our returning champion (who wrote the book that launched The 100), I became less concerned about her need to maintain as a champion. But, man I did poorly this episode. I only knew 12 of the total questions (which is very much below average for me). In the end, it was kinda underwhelming when they all missed Final Jeopardy, and I was even more ashamed that I missed it since it was a movie reference.

Episode Grade: B-

6) The Chase (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: No

This show is usually pretty fun, but James was very disappointing in the final chase. I’ve seen much stronger teams not walk away with the cash, and this was a really weak duo that James should have handily beaten.

Episode Grade: B-

7) DMZ (HBOMAX)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

I’m still not sure what I want from this series, as I expected something different. It’s evolving on its own, and in the second episode, it continues to find its footing. It feels odd to know that this is a limited series and not something looking for a second season, as this also feels like something that has recurring potential.

Episode Grade: B-

8) The Resident (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: I feel like there was at one point, but I haven’t heard it in a long time.

Admittedly, I started watching this show because I love Emily Van Camp. Since her exit, I’ve been contemplating my own exit as well. And bringing in Andrew McCarthy this week didn’t change my mind. This show hasn’t been renewed yet, and it’s losing a series regular from this season anyway. I think if Bruce Greenwood left, I’d probably stop watching. I have loved his character’s redemption arc over the 4 seasons, and he’s in a much better place now, then where he was at the beginning. That makes for a very interesting, well rounded character. The rest of the cast? Look, I don’t like to trash child actors, but was that the best child that auditioned for Gigi? Was there no one else?

Episode Grade: C+

9) Human Resources (Netflix)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

Fun fact, I stopped watching Big Mouth. After a while, it got really uncomfortable watching a show about kids, with that level of content, even if they were voiced by adults. I gave Human Resources (a spinoff) a chance to do something different. It is kind of different, in a way that the focus is more on the various monsters, and sometimes they do help adults. But I think this style of humor still isn’t working for me. I don’t know if I’ll be back for a second season.

10) The Golden Girls (Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: no

Remember how I hated that clip show the last time I posted about this? Third season is a bit too early to have a retrospective? Well, it was a two-parter.

Episode Grade: F
