The Too Much TV Roundup- June 7th

Well, I have a couple of shows now with only one episode left that will be finished off next week I believe. Picking the top show today was difficult, as a couple of shows were firing on all cylinders.

1) Russian Doll (Netflix)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

In what I believe is the penultimate hour (possibly for the series), Nadia went through some really trippy stuff as she gave birth to herself, then decided to kidnap herself and bring her back to the future, only to find out that time seemed to be collapsing around her. But then her worst fears set in, as she started to question everything after seeing herself dead multiple times. What is going on this season? I guess the answers will arrive in the finale.

Episode Grade: A

2) The Boys (Amazon)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

OK, so it’s obviously super suspect how Soldier Boy “died” since only one member from the team seemed to be alive and claiming she saw his death during the flashback sequence. I have a feeling the Russians have kidnapped Soldier Boy, but that’s just my guess right now. This episode won for three big moments. The exchanges between Butcher and Ryan, Homelander’s power play reminding The Deep who is boss, and his speech to Starlight reminding her of what happens if he doesn’t get his way. Season 3 Episode 3 is moving the season along quite nicely.

Episode Grade: A

3) Woke (Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

After dealing with the fallout of giving himself his own award, Keef actually finds a bigger problem when he runs into a situation where the police are attacking an un housed population, leading him to realize that the shows from the Keef Knight Project are actually the problem, as the metadata is being sold to the police, and the 5G in the shoes is actually making it easier for the police to track the population. When he realizes what he’s done, he tries to course correct, only to be told that his business partner owns the Keef Knight Project and there’s nothing he can do about it. But with one episode left this season, is there?

Episode Grade: A

4) Full Frontal With Samantha Bee (TBS)

English Audio Description Available?: No

I’m a full episode behind, so I just watched her episode centered around the Texas mass shooting, and gun control, followed by the second half looking at what’s going on with nurses in this country.

Episode Grade: A

5) The Hardy Boys (Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

In the 4th episode of Season 2, we continued to see shit getting real. Someone has been bugging the Hardy household and knows that Joe and Frank know something about the eye, Frank finds out that the evil organization can track him every time he “uses” the eye, and a man in a demon mask tries to steal the only evidence that may answer the question as to why their friend is now catatonic. Oh, and Belinda’s dad may be dating pure evil.

Episode Grade: A-

6) Outer Range (Amazon)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

I was back and forth between an A- and a B+, but there was something extra special about that Tillerson up in his room in his underwear belting Whitney Houston. They may have appeared as maniac assholes in the last episode, but the Tillersons love them some Whitney. Also, points gained for showing us what happened to Royal when he went into the black hole.

Episode Grade: A-

7) The Girl From Plainville (Hulu)

English Audio Description Available?: Yes

I had a couple of issues with the episode. First, the huge lead in reminding us that the doctors testimony about drugs is widely disputed felt like a stand in for the ability to convey that effect through actual storytelling. It felt like Hulu didn’t believe the episode did enough to debunk the doctor’s opinion, and he comes across as too valid, therefore this episode would cause everyone to go off their meds if they didn’t give you a warning in advance. It kind of ruins the story, and not allowing the Prosecutor to do her job, or the show runners behind The Girl From Plainville. Then again, They were right at the point where they could have given us a verdict and closed off at Episode 7, but out of some weird contractual obligation we got stretched one more episode? So the whole thing was kind of a failure, instead of being worried about taking this show out on a high note, it felt the need to warn us in advance, and then extend the results for one more episode.

Episode Grade: C+
