The Too Much TV Roundup- October 20th

Six shows enter. one will make the top. This is The Round Up.

6) The Masked Singer (FOX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Does anyone else find it incredibly reductive for an artist like the one eliminated last night, who is a legendary singer in her own right, to be eliminated immediately? This show has always had a problem with legends, as their older voice isn’t as popping as it once was. But throw her from her prime into this competition, and she would not have gone home. In some ways, The Masked Singer can’t figure out how to keep these “legends” as they keep calling them, from being eliminated by whatever YouTuber has the most experience with auto tune.

Episode Grade: B

5) New Amsterdam (NBC/Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

So… what was the actual message here? I was expecting Max to figure out a workaround like he always has in literally every episode. That’s what he actually does. But man, he got defeated early on, and now his hospital is short staffed. And despite his rousing speech, they are short staffed. It was something they were already complaining about, they did a whole episoe on people being overworked and needing a personal day. And in this episode, before Max’s Captain My Captain moment, there was a line of dialogue revealing 4 nurses had already quit. Did we forget that? What a bizarrely awful New Amsterdam episode that is so against everything this show is. No wonder it’s ending this season if Max is giving up that quickly.

Episode Grade: B

4) The Connors (ABC/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

As the littlest Connor was headed off to pre-school, she learned that she was also the smartest kid in class. Which led to Becky and Darlene fighting over her teacher’s reaction that Beverly Rose should just stop talking and answering questions. Becky wanted her to be liked, but Darlene was worried about what that was teaching her, to not speak up. In the end, we figured out which sister was right, when Becky found out that by listening to her mom, Beverly Rose stopped engaging at all, something the teacher thought was awesome. While not a hilarious episode, the B-Plot did revolve around Dan using edibles to manage his shoulder pain.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

In the 8th episode of the final season, Kenji starts to realize his dad is pure evil. I don’t know where this show is headed, but Kenji’s father is written in such an over the top Bond villain way, and we are so close to the end, I don’t know how it’s possible for him to turn around his character. Does this show end with Kenji killing his dad? I’m not seeing an alternative at this point.

Episode Grade: A-

2) The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

I bumped this up to an A, because it really subverted my expectations. I had a feeling that she would draft the kids, but I thought it was leading up more to Jace being her first pick, which isn’t what happened. Still, The Ducks are mostly together, and if Jace can find his shot, they might just win the whole thing. And it will teach a certain Duck not to abandon his team, and his girlfriend.

Episode Grade: A

1) Five Days At Memorial (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Thank God no humans were around when I watched this. i wanted to punch someone so bad. Is this story accurate? Did they really just say “fuck it” and leave after that asshat was like “EVERYONE will leave this building if I have to carry them out myself.” Well, fucker who i hope is now in jail, you didn’t actually do that. you left patients to die. All your threats of trespassing and arresting others, and then you just left people who were still alive to die. So, whoever that dude was that came in at the top of the episode like the Kool Aid Man, with his boisterous demands, if there is a real life counterpart, I hope he can’t hurt anyone anymore. Also, I do hope someone along the way punched him in the face for something. Anything. A bar fight… whatever. Then I realized how riled up I was, and how this show got under my skin, and that’s what great television does. It made me hate someone I’m not sure is real, and spent the hour horrifying me with choices, leaving a lot of the LifeCare patients behind to die, killing pets, and not following through on the promise to get every living patient out of Memorial hospital.
