The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/16/23

Well, NBC has opted to not renew American Auto after all. Looks like a solid victim of the writers strike, as they needed to either extend contracts at the end of the month, or cancel. However, MAX is sticking with Velma.

15) The Adventures Of The Gummi Bears (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Consistently ranking low, this nostalgic trip hasn’t quite worked out. This was the 7th episode, and I’m trying to get at least 10 in so i have that fully revived memory. This one was mostly about adopting an abandoned wolf cub.

Episode Grade: C

14) Dave (FX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

it’s probably the most Atlanta-esque episode so far, but lil Dickey goes through some social media drama, gets really excited about certain major celebrities following and retweeting him, and then calls his parents who do’t pay any attention at all.

Episode Grade: C+

13) Designing Women (hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Charlene was told she would be dying that day, so the girls plan a sleepover, and drop some truth bombs. It really wasn’t that interesting.

Episode Grade: C+

12) Futurama (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Revived

Since I’m just now starting season 2, maybe I’ll make it to the end before the revival starts. Bender really is the best reason to watch this show.

Episode Grade: B-

episode Grade: B

9) Buffy The Vampire Slayer (Hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Last time I wrote about this, I mentioned that I saw the title of the next episode and I remembered it. It’s not one of my favorite episodes. It’s that praying mantis episode, where they never really explain where things like her come from over the course of the next 7 seasons.

Episode Grade: B

8) Justified (FX/Hulu)

English Audio Description?: no

Status: Revived

That argument at the top when Raylon finds himself in another shooting was fun, but this was kind of a slow episode, even if it felt like the stakes were higher as Raylon wondered if he was the intended target.

Episode Grade: B

7) Blindspotting (Starz)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Not yet Renewed

Jackie takes her boyfriend to meet her dad. Without audio description, this was a bit weird, and i didn’t get the pirate references at the top until it was clear that Jackie’s dad is Dante Basco (aka Rufio from hook), so he obviously doesn’t like pirates. This show would have topped the whole damn list, even without audio description, but for some reason, it felt the need to have another plot going at the same time. All I wanted to see was Rufio crowing, and challenging his daughter’s boyfriend to a sword fight. So random. So completely random, but delicious.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Unstable (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: yes

Status: Renewed

As father and son bond by helping the groundskeepers put in sprinklers, they also have to plot to get rid of their new houseguest, who isn’t so happy and might now be willing to tell everyone about how he was kidnapped.

4) The Big Door Prize (Apple Plus)

Status: Renewed

We learn a lot more about our Priest, which comes with a revelation that this is not the first machine. It has popped up elsewhere before.

Episode Grade: A-

3) The Traitors Australia (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Unknown

Just like one of the American traitors who created an unnecessary lie, Mirielle made it far too obvious that she was a traitor, and that put her up for a blindside elimination. Her name wasn’t even brought up really as a possibility, and then suddenly she was gone. That must have sucked, but she was getting a little too controlling and believing she had it in the bag.

Episode Grade: A

2) The Other Two (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

Every. Moment. perfection.

From Brooke quitting the industry and becoming invisible, to Cary auditioning and being present when Dylan O’Brien thinks his webcam is voice controlled, to their mother trying desperately to get out of the house, everything worked. Even Lucas now method acting for a Christmas movie.

Episode Grade: A+

1) Succession (HBO)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

The election episode will likely be the reason everyone gets their Emmy nominations. Jeremy Strong, kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, Matthew Macfayden, Alan Ruck, and even Nicholas Braun all had at least one moment. Some had more. A great hour of TV, and one of Succession’s best. A terrifying look at how Election night coverage can actually influence.
