The Too Much TV Roundup- 06/24/23

A couple of things. First, I have not properly given a shoutout to Tubi, which is now offering a select number of titles with audio description. This is their first month, and they already have surpassed AMC Plus. Hah. I do plan on watching something from them soonish to support their new offerings, and give a review on how easy it is to access it. You can find a list of titles where you can find all the lists of titles for all the streaming services. The Audio Description project: adp.acb.org

Second, congrats to Bupkus on a second season renewal.

12) Muppets Mayhem (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

I’m kind of at that point, four episodes in, where I’m starting to wonder if the format for this should be TV Show. I’m starting to lean into a movie. It could have been kind of a very Spinal Tap thing, had they gone with a movie, and kicked it up to eleven.

Episode Grade: B-

11) Clone high (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

We have one character doing a solid JFK accent, and the rest of the clones don’t really seem to need to be who they are. Second episode in and Confucius is battling Topher in the comments section of a video, and I’m wondering what about either of these characters require them to be the clones they are?It doesn’t have to be 100%, but there should always be glimpses and glimmers of the references. This just seems like it’s missssing on the premise.

Episode Grade: B-

10) Trophy Wife (hulu)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Bradley Whitford is withholding candy from the kid who egged his house, arguing that you can’t do both. Plus, Bert gets lost.

Episode Grade: B

9) Bupkus (Peacock)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

Pete Davidson wants to be a father, so he takes his niece to a theme park (is Coney Island a theme park?), and of course this should be a slam dunk. Pete Davidson around kids. Sadly, it seems like his entourage is with him, and not Joe Pesci. When the writers have a chance to develop his entourage and make them funny, sure. In the meantime, always choose joe Pesci. Pesci and kids is equally a hilarious proposition, that’s why home alone is such a classic.

Final Grade: B

7) Frasier (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

Man, they really waited forever to put Niles and Daphne together. Daphne goes out on a date with someone else, which gives us that sad ending where her new date comments on her smell and doesn’t know what it is, and Nile’s does.

episode Grade: B

7) Mad Men ( Free Vee)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Ended

It was entertaining to see pete get so little love from the ladies at the return desk when he tried to return a chip and dip thing, and then later he’s just walking around freely with a gun. but, can we talk about why Betty would even give a kid that’s not hers some of her hair? i know these were simpler times, and serial killers weren’t pervasive, but it’s a creepy ask no matter what. It’s odd when your own kid wants it, it’s fucking weird when another kid wants some.

Episode Grade: B+

6) Boy Meets World (Disney plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

Everyone has a friend like Shawn. After blowing up a mailbox, Shawn seeks refuge at Cory’s, where Cory has to learn to help Shawn from making terrible life choices.

Episode Grade: A-

5) The Walking Dead: Dead City (AMC Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: I can’t imagine they don’t renew this

We get a flashback of Herschel being super useless and emo, and a fantastic Negan moment involving a knock knock joke and references to a hurricane. It’s how he manages to make you laugh while he does something terrible that make him such a complex character.

Episode Grade: A-

4) Shiny Happy People (Amazon)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Limited

The audio description returned to normal this week, and I am really judging anyone who says they are this IVLP thing. you are in a cult, not a religion. Also, watching this series will likely bring shame to anyone who every thought Jim Bob was a good guy.

Episode Grade: A-

3) Beavis and Butthead (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: hopefully Renewed

Every sketch made me laugh. The first one had the boys fall into a manhole where they assumed they were in hell, and found a jackhammer (in the sewer?) and wanted to get to the cool level of hell. Then, they made fun of a hilarious music video. The second part had Butthead hitting Beavis in the testicles and saying Take A Bow, which lead Beavis to the hospital eventually, and Butthead actually prayed. There was also a video of a guy who mixed and drank 7 different types of Mountain Dew.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Queen Charlotte (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed I

Need more of this show. From Agatha trying to make sure her estate and title stayed with her now that her husband is dead, to Charlotte fighting her evil stepmother, and trying to get her husband back. That final moment was fucking stand up and cheer great, when she said basically if mad is what my husband needs, then let him be mad.

Episode Grade: A

1) Succession (HBo/MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Final Season

Funeral day. I’ve seen a lot of talk about James Cromwell winning an Emmy for that speech. I thought it was Ok. But Nick offerman showed more range in The Last Of us (so did Murray Bartlett). That being aside, the standout here was Kieran Culkin, who just couldn’t bring himself to speak. Alan Ruck’s Connor got sidelined a lot, all things considered, and Sarah Snook did a pretty great job here. Kendall became even more unlikable if that’s possible.
