The Too Much TV Roundup- 08/03/23

I did a two hour interview on audio description yesterday, and i still had time to watch all of this plus a movie. Plus, there’s actual TV news to talk about! Amazon has renewed The Summer i Turned Pretty for a third season, while Apple plus will not be moving forward with City on Fire. I’m OK with those choices, though I haven’t even started the second season yet of Summer.

12) The Horror Of Delores Roach (Amazon)

I’m just not latching onto the Justina machado series, even though I love her. My mind wanderss and this is only a half hour show. A third episode? I don’t know. i do love her, and i wish her One Day At A time was still running.

Episode Grade: C

11) Clarissa Explains it All (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I truly don’t remember this at all from my childhood watching Clarissa. Perhaps it has to do with Clarissa having a crush on an older guy. I did laugh when her mom said she had a crush on John Denver, because it reminded me that even though this show is aimed at kids, it’s basically as old as The Golden Girls and Designing Women… just with a child lead. I’d love for them to add audio description, because there are so many visual interstitial moments, as well as Clarissa frequently programs an entire game somehow to represent her needs for the episode. Plus, there are lots of sight gags.

10) All in The Family (FreeVee)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

One of the most classic sitcoms could use some audio description. This episode kinda lost me. Archie had a family over, and there were lots of Italian jokes. It reminded me of how even though we don’t like to teach it anymore, white people used to be shitty to other white people. you don’t get that much anymore, but even in the 1970’s, people were still being the butt of a joke for being Italian, Polish, or other ethnicities people like Archie Bunker didn’t like.

9) Happy endings (Roku)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Ended

I’m a much bigger fan of the series altogether, but this has a weird pilot. This gang finds their groove later on, but that joke Adam Pally makes in the pilot so we know his character is gay is so cringeworthy. Something like “That’s the gayest thing ever, and i just had sex with a dude last night.” I know what that line is supposed to achieve, but it makes me groan, because it’s so lazy. I believe this was with audio description when Netflix had it, so I’d love for Roku to carry audio description for this show.

8) American Born Chinese (Disney Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet Renewed

There are a lot of ideas in this show. Jin has his parents having to come to school to hear about an incident on the field, only to have his obviously white principal make a lot of racial stereotypes. That scene was awkward, but really important for people to see. She couldn’t even pronounce their name correctly. I think what really hit me in this episode, was ke Huy Kwon playing the former actor, who talks about life after this one role, and how he never was offered the kinds of roles he wanted to play. He was never the hero, he was always the nerd or the neighbor. I think that speech was very personal for him, and for a show I’ve gotten mixed feelings about over its run, it worked for me.

7) Young Sheldon (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Renewed

The mom was a bit much this episode. And the contradictory shit she said made me dislike her even as an adult. It was all over the place in a weird episode where her cultish devotion to religion caused her to have a mental breakdown over comic books and magazines. Am I supposed to like her? When she and Sheldon make up at the end, it’s only because of a tornado, not because they found common ground.

Episode Grade: B+

6) The Good Wife (Paramount Plus)

English Audio Description?: No

Status: Spinoff Coming At Midseason

The kid needs to drop the creepy older girl. Alicia needs to let her son do his thing so he can figure out what’s on the video. Her defense of a doctor that prescribed oxy was so weird, because it is trapped in 2010, when i guess we were still OK with prescribing it? But, the case was interesting. I would have preferred narration for a number of scenes where it seemed like something was written down on a piece of paper, or they noticed some visual evidence that wasn’t relayed to me.

Episode Grade: B+

5) The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Status: Not Yet renewed

Just finished Episode 5, timed perfectly with the drop of 5 more episodes. I’m about 95% sure Lisa did it, and 5% on the podcaster.

Episode Grade: B+

4) The Righteous gemstones (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

Poor Keith, being exiled from the Gemstone family. And then, looks like you can’t pay your one night stand to go away after all.

3) Glamorous (Netflix)

I’m not super excited about who the mole might be. Part of me hopes it’s the guy Madeline is dating, as she might be destined for her driver, who was so sweet when she was having that nervous breakdown. The other part of me would love for it to be her son, but he seems unlikely as he was the one freaking out the most about it. I’d love for it to end up not being a mole, but instead be the rep trying to navigate the corporate takeover.

Episode Grade: A-

2) Veep (MAX)

English Audio Description?: Yes

What is the right kind of frozen yogurt that sends the right political message?

1) The After Party (Apple Plus)

English Audio Description?: Yes

The second episode is from Grace’s point of view, and I love that her point of view, since she likes antiques, has everyone talking like they are in a Jane Austen novel, or Bridgerton. Very fancy, and I’d be shocked if the initial suspect actually killed him. I’m picking up on little clues, and that lizard is going to definitely have something to do with it.
